+1. I've used a similar version of the response to "you've got enough to start a war." "Nope, I didn't start it but this ought to be enough to finish it."

People need to learn when to keep their nose out of your business instead of making snide little comments. If they want to say something stupid, then I figure I might as well increase the hyperbole to show them the idiocy of their statement.

Depends, had a little Partagas this afternoon - I've gotten hooked on the Sancho Panza brand lately, but for tonight's walk up & over California St I'll grab a San Luis Rey. Always interesting to pass the non - smokers on the way up somewhere between Kearny & Powell.

You know, in general I think what these folks object to is not WHAT we do per se (guns, cigars, whatever) but that we're having fun at all with something they don't understand. I think it galls the hell out of them - I guess they think it's OK to be different, so long as everyone's different in exactly the same way?

you know a great line would be just that you're not trying to start a war... i really like shutting down presumptuous people... make the guy feel like a dick for being a dick.

That has always been my approach. Never a reason not to smile and just be friendly -- if anything that overcomes the unfortunate stereotype that a lot of gun owners are angry. Oh, wait...I am..uh...never mind.

The thing to remember is that in most cases you are not going to win votes or change anybody's mind in the checkout line...but you never know; best to be prepared if/when the opportunity presents itself and the first order of business there is "do no harm". Simply being friendly goes a looooong way in that regards.

The simple truth is always the best approach, IMHO.

"Well, it probably looks like a lot, but it takes regular practice to be safe and proficient with firearms, and you'd be surprised how fast this much ammo will disappear while practicing at the range!"

The great thing about this country is that we have the right to go shoot and enjoy it, and those who wish to sneer at us have the right to do that as well. Being polite doesn't cost a thing, and besides being the right thing to do, its good PR too. Good job, Oaklander!

Thanks everyone for the kind words!

Yes, I was so taken aback that I couldn't even come up with something snappy to say - so I just said the truth. Glad I did. It's better for us to keep our best foot forward, at least in public!!!

could of said you were working undercover for Michael Moore and suggest he see if they would sell 4-5 boxes to him.

I had a neighbor feeding my dog while I was on vacation and commented on how much ammo I had (stored near my dog's food). I told him that was less than a years worth and then got to take him and his two kids shooting.

Funniest thing that happened to me buying ammo at Walmart (back when they carried ammo by my house) was once when I went to pick up a shovel to do some yard work and pick up the cases of 223 I had them order for me (they never stocked as much as I wanted) while I was there. The girl that normally worked there knew me but the guy working with her wasn't sure what to think. He actually asked if I was planning on burying the body's. The girl and I just about fell down laughing.

As I'm buying a 1000 rounds of 45 ACP in the Sporting Goods department, this guy is waiting in line for a refund or something and starts to give me dirty looks.

Then he says, "you've got enough there to start a war."

I thought for a second and then replied with the truth, "yes, this will last me about a month or so."

He just smirks, and continues to give me dirty looks.
Oh wait, I know that guy!

Knowing you oaklander, I'm sure you were more than polite to him. But just between you and me, was it this guy?

My and my friend later joke about what I should have said.

Some of our ideas were along the lines of:

"Yes, there's a lot of people who need killing."

"I'm getting ready for a zombie attack."

"Just want to make sure I really kill the bastard."

                              And stuff like that.

Then I realize that being honest and polite was the best thing I could have done. The reason is that this guy may have never even talked to a shooter before, and it was my only chance to make a good impression on him.

The moral of the story is that we are all ambassadors for the sport, and when dealing with non-shooters, we should be polite.

Maybe he was interested in asking you out, but was shy.
