Good question. I too was thinking of a zinc shot alloy for upland game. We need something soft and similar to lead for all of the fixed "full chokes" and older shotguns (aka: family heirlooms and "classics") still out there.
I was at BassPro yesterday and noticed that they don't make a "lead free" shot for .410, 28ga, nor did I see any lead-free for 20 or 16. In all of those calibers, they had plenty of lead shot only. Not so much in 28ga however, but they still had some. For 12ga, they had a bunch of steel shot. I don't want to shoot that in my old SKB double gun. That's been my upland bird-gun for at least 35 years and before that, it was my dad's.
I wanted my son to get my .28ga double, but without lead free shot, many of us are screwed and hunting out of state all the time, isn't a viable option.
Finding lead free .22LR for squirrel hunting is like trying to find Noah's arc!!!!!
I hope we get more lead-free bullet and shot options available to us and soon!!!! By the way, bismuth metal is very very expensive! I'm hoping a tin-zinc-copper mix gets developed to replace lead.
Better yet, it would be a miracle if they ever pass that Federal bill that was introduced, making it illegal for states to ban lead for hunting and fishing. It died months ago in It's early stages. Not enough support for it. I hope it comes up again.

Best alternative is to hunt a state that is not full of A-hole politicians and tell California to stick it hard and deep! Other than that I love lead.Comment

Hornady GMX, Barnes TSX, Nosler E-tip are all solid copper. Not as dense as lead so reloading is a little different.
I just got some 7mm GMX and a 139gr. bullets It is .332 longer than a 7mm 150gr. Remington Core Lokt bullet.Comment

I found Nosler's BTLF projectiles, but I have not found any for those of us who do not reload. I've been looking for .308 for a while now.Peace is that brief moment in history when everybody stands around reloading. - unknown

You find lead free .308 Winchester ammo online, it's the only place I shop for stuff although I seldom buy loaded ammo. Here are few sources, the first few listings are in stock, the rest on back order. People wanting to hunt in California are going to have buy enough ammo when it's available or learn to handload, or take up archery. Act fast this stuff will soon go bye-bye. The manufacturers of lead free bullets and ammo makers using their bullets are cranking them out as fast as possible, but its snapped up faster than a case of Corona at a picnic.
