How do I sell a handgun?

I'm thinking about selling one of my handguns. If it is a private sale? What is the process?

You walk into the store with the gun and your license. Buyer must be present and all the burden is on them.

If it's consignment it's pretty much the same process for you but between you and the dealer only.

If it's going out of state, well it starts getting a bit more tricky.

Bottom line is you just need to leave the gun there and have your identication with you. You don't need receipts, registration papers, HGSC, etc. Just the gun and identification.

find a buyer..meet at an FFL,( gun shop ) fill out forms, pay fees.

Best to call the FFL prior to meeting there and confirm he will do the transfer.

Do i have the buyer pay me up front or do I wait until he clears the background check? Thanks for the help.

And BTW, the buyer pays the fees of course. At least I'd consider that the norm, correct?

But make sure that you let us know here what you are selling, maybe one of us will buy it.

A few tips for a trouble free transaction:

                  - make sure the buyer knows to have his HSC card, ID and some form of paperwork that proves his residence (phone bill, vehicle registration, etc.) If the address on the ID does *not* match the address of the residence paperwork he should print out the DMV thingy for change of address and tape to the back of his ID. If the buyer fails to show up with his paperwork/docs correct, the FFL (gun shop) may not let him do the paperwork so you the seller will be stuck taking the gun back home.

                  - agree on the price beforehand, don't haggle it out at the time of transaction. I personally prefer cash and will not accept a personal check.

                  - meet inside the gun shop (don't go looking at the gun together in the parking lot), allow the buyer to inspect the firearm and make a final sale agreement. buyer hands you the money right there in the store while starting the paperwork
