    Passive muffs for passive plugs

    Hi everyone,

I'm looking for a pair of passive ear muffs that will filter firing noise while still being able to hear voices in combination with the Surefire EP7's I bought. I had bought some Howard Leight L3's and they seem to just shut everything out. Plus they don't provide enough room for my ears. I got them elven ears.

I know there are active muffs, but it seems like a hassle to put in batteries and seem like extra weight.

Got less than 4 days til I can pick up my first gun (SP-01) and I think I'll mostly do handgun shooting in indoor ranges. Budget is best kept around $50, but if they are really nice I can shell out much more. Got to protect my ears to enjoy my other hobby - audiophilia.

Howard Leight Impact Sport muffs are very popular. Uses two AAA batteries, so it's not a whole lot of extra weight. Gotta double up, however (NRR 22). Available for <$50 shipped.

I've read the Impact Sport muffs kinda suck. There would be a peakiness to the attenuation.

Reading around, there doesn't seem to be any passive filtering tech for muffs so I might have no choice but to get active ones.

Anyone have experience with these? http://www.amazon.com/3M-Tactical-He...VNVTZBZ22F1EN7
      Anything better for that price?

Just get electronic. My peltors take one 9v battery and that doesnt add much weight. If you remember to turn them off the battery will last a year or more.

I used to double up but lately have only been using the EP7 you've got indoor and they have been working well. Prior to that I would use some disposable foam plugs with the 3M Peltor electronics. I'd rarely even turn the knob on the Peltors. If you really need to hear what's going on you should just pull the Peltors off real quick.

Interesting. I actually haven't gone shooting since I got my EP7's so I have no idea how well they will perform. Good to know the EP7's might be enough.

Do you have any issues with the Comply tips? The ones that came with mine seem too small for my canal. I better bring some silicone tips just in case and maybe purchase larger Complys if needed.

I guess I'll know by this weekend. If I need a bit more hearing protection, maybe I'll just get some comfortable, passive, muffs with very low protection.
