Would I have to register my long guns?

So I have to move to NM for few years for work. I was wondering if I became NM resided (you know, get a driver's license there) and I took my firearms with me, would I have to register them upon returning to CA? All my firearms/long guns were purchased in CA, prior to registration, except for one hand gun. And if I left them with a family member to care for, and picked them up when I get back, would that be a legal option to avoid registration.

Another issue I have is that I have a handgun waiting to DROS (stupid 1 in 30) and I can't DROS it until October 3rd. I'm moving out this Thursday. I will be back later next month to pick up the rest of my stuff, but that will only allow me to do DROS, but I won't be back to pick it up in 10 days. Should I just say forget it and have FFL send it back, eat the cost of shipping, restocking fee, etc.?

Guns you might buy in NM while a resident there would certainly (with today's law) need to be registered when you returned to CA to live.

Handguns purchased in CA since 1991, and through a CA FFL before that, are already registered. You would not have to re-register those.

I do not believe it is clear about handguns acquired pre-1991 from a private party, and long guns before 2014, that they would need to be registered. They do not need to be registered if you STAY in California, but move out, move back seems untested.
And if I left them with a family member to care for, and picked them up when I get back, would that be a legal option to avoid registration.
seems to be unnecessary, but leaving them with someone who has access has all the external features of a transfer - which would require an FFL, or if the family member were to be a parent or grandparent or child or grandchild, an OPLAW form.

The 10-day wait is the minimum. The max is 30 days. Some FFLs have a 'storage fee' policy for over-10. You should ask about that.

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!

Right, I didn't think about handguns like that. All of mine were purchased in CA after 1991. It's the long guns that I acquired before 2014 is what I'm wondering about.

And about the pistol that I have waiting for the 30 days to go by, it's a C&R. If I became NM resident, could the FFL, here in CA, that currently has possession of it, send it directly to me? I do have FFL 03, and I most definitely have to update the address on it, before considering that option.

      Thanks
