    Comprehensive Cartridge Comparison Project (CCCP)

So I spent a couple days working on a project: I collected "average" stats on as many cartridges as possible and compared them on a graph based on projectile mass, muzzle velocity, and bullet diameter. I admit it wasn't very scientific; my main source was Wikipedia with a bit of ChuckHawks thrown in. But I think it makes a very interesting comparison of an "average" round for each calibre.

If anyone feels like helping out by providing more in-depth, accurate ballistics information, I'd be very grateful!

Universal Comparison (from .22LR to 14.5x114mm):

    Rifle Comparison:

    Pistol Comparison:

Note that my classifications are not set in stone, merely the categories that make sense to me based on how the chart breaks down.

Side note: like the League to Save Mankind From Tobacco, your project suffers from a prior use of the initials.

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!

I had guessed that was intentional and semi-ironic, much as it was when the California Community Co-location Project used the same initials. Or in your own example, for that matter.

              Looks pretty cool.

              One problem............

I don't see the high power rifles that the media always refers to

Your descriptions of the different classes are good. I like the high velocity rifle and the light rifle. According to CSI or maybe it was a different tv show, a 22lr is a low velocity pistol round. At least I know I wasn't crazy, as your chart confirms what I knew..........the 22 lr is higher in velocity than a number of other pistols, not to mention many reloaders load lighter pistol ammo.

On second thought, maybe you should delete those charts. We can't have too much common sense, as the sheeple might catch on.

This is pretty lacking. It doesn't account for the innumerable intricacies of terminal ballistics, projectile density or composition, trajectory, et cetera...

And Ballistics By the Inch already does something kind of like this except they fire off a lot of the stuff to check it. http://ballisticsbytheinch.com/

Ah well at the end of the day good effort. At least you got to research some ammo, eh?
So I was driving home from the range and I noticed that the scent of warm steel, burnt gunpowder and lukewarm coffee combined and smelled oddly of... Peanut butter?! Man, the Hoppe's is going to my head.

Barrel length, air temperature, pressure, humidity, barrel crowning, factory tolerances, coriolis effect... Like I said, not scientific, just a general idea sort of thing.

Ballistics By the Inch have the right idea -- it's just really slow and expensive to collect the data, unfortunately...

How about doing the same but for kinetic energy? Isn't the really the number we should be looking at when comparing cartridges/ calibers?

Funny thing is I was just thinking about this last night.

According to that .40 S&W and 10mm are the same. That is only for the wimpy FBI loadings. Full power loads for 10mm hit between .357 mag and .44 mag.

Not sure what you mean? It's shown on the chart as being 300fps faster, between .357 and .44 Magnum, which is about right.
