    Home built 1911

Okay, I need the lawyers here. What are the legalities of buying a 1911 frame, and building my own? Brownells sells the frames, and I can have it shipped to an ffl, but how does that square with the roster and its ridiculous requirements for handguns?

Can't do it as the handgun (frame) is not on the roster.

See if you can locate a frame already in state, convince the guy he needs to sell it to you and PPT.

Thanks. That's what I was afraid of.

I haven't done one yet. I've been allocating funds elsewhere but it is on the horizon

Shouldn't be too tough with some mechanical know how and the right tools.

Plenty of folks have finished and built 80% 1911s. Check over in the gunsmithing forum. I built mine with a Tactical Machining 80%. The 80 to 100% work took less than 2 hours on my mill and surface grinder. The rest of the fitting takes longer...

I've done one with a KTO frame (little harder than TM frame), but it's fun and it shot like a dream. It's not at all impossible. I never handled a handgun before I started on the project.

DOJ doesn't require the demo be done on the pistol your transfering. You can do the demo on any pistol of "the same make and model". Most FFLs inventory various 1911s that could fit the requirement for you to use for the demo.

but if it must be of the "same make and model", you can't use a Colt 1911 to do the HSD for a Caspian Arms 1911 frame.

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

You have no imagination - just think of all the makes and models you can build from a bare frame. Nowhere on any DOJ form does it ask what you intend on building.

not sure how the FFL could fill out the form that says that you did the demo on a Colt 1911 Rail Gun but that your DROS lists that you got a Caspian Arms XYZ. The make of those two firearms are not the same, and neither is the model. It isn't what you might want to make, it is what the firearm is actually at the time at DROS. And I don't see a way that you could ever make a "Colt" from a "Caspian Arms". It might resemble a Colt, but can never be one.
