    For Home Defense ....

    I have several guns, but most importantly an AR15, XD9 and a 1911 .45.

Each of these have at least three magazines for them. As of now everything is locked up in my closet, no big deal it's close and I can get to it. BUT none of the magazines are loaded. Why? Because I've been told that it will kill the springs over time, I don't want to keep them loaded and go to use them and have feeding issues. But then it makes them useless for home defense. I can get to the guns with in a few seconds; it's setup so that they are nearby. But loading the magazines would take too long to be useful. Should I keep at least one loaded? One of each type (everyone in my family is gun safe and dependable)?

    Thoughts?

Just load them up. If they wear out, just buy more magazines. Your life is worth more than a cost saving measure.

Magazines can be replaced, your life cant.

I'm pretty sure that this has been a topic here a few times already but metal fatigue on your springs only happens when in constant use or unloading and loading. So you should be fine with the mags loaded for a long time.

I've only ever had one magazine for my Springfield P9C. (CZ75 clone) It's been loaded almost continuously since 1992 and it works just fine.

Spring life is only degraded during the constant cycling of a spring. Keeping a spring compressed does not degrade life. That is an Internet myth.

Numerous threads, many expert opinions, engineering facts. Keeping mags loaded does not wear them out. Springs only wear during movement.

You can keep them loaded for decades.

A unloaded Magazine is a paper weight, useless. All of my Mags are loaded. I have friends that rotate mags.

i bought a new truck last month and parked it in the drive way, but my gas tank is completely empty. i never keep any gas in the tank because i heard gas goes bad, over time.

^^^^sounds pretty stupid right? well so does an unloaded firearm thats' purpose is home defense.
If you suck with irons you will suck with optics. The difference is the aimpoint will allow you to suck faster and a scope will give you a closer look at how much you suck.

Load em, the magazine springs will hold up just fine under pressure. If you can't bring yourself to load them, buy a revolver.

Wait, What?? I've been jacking up my car every time I park, to take the weight off the springs! Doesn't everyone do that?

The Wilson Combat techs have stated at one point in a video somewhere that stretching the springs when cleaning magazines will damage them. That said, constant movement will degrade (loading and emptying), as opposed to static pressure (I.E. loaded), the magazine springs for your magazines.

I seem to remember that term from a linked article a while back. And that's what I recall, shouldn't be an issue leaving them loaded.

Keep them loaded the springs will not degrade. Not actually necessary, but you can rotate them around as you go the range.
