    How Effective is LEO Ammunition?

Out here in California the Highway Patrol rely on the Speer Gold Dot 180gr 40cal Hollow Point as their duty ammunition. Many civilians also use the Speer Gold Dot line as defensive ammunition. Below is our testing and evaluation of the round.

    Testing Setup

We conducted a bare gelatin test, with gelatin from clearballistics.com. For this test we used a retired CHP duty weapon, the S&W Model 4006. We fired the round from ten feet, through our chronograph, and into the gelatin.

    Results

    • Muzzle Veloctiy: 1496 ft/sec (32% higher than advertised)
    • Maximum Penetration: 16 inches +
    • Temporary Cavity: ~ 4.5 inches
    • Maximum Permanent Cavity: 0.6 inches
    • Minimum Permanent Cavity: 0.1 inches
    • Proper Expansion: Yes
    • Mass Retained: > 99%

    Conclusion

The Speer Gold Dot 180gr 40cal is a viable option for defensive use. The round expanded properly, and maintained virtually all of its mass. The round's velocity seems extremely high for a 40 caliber. I will return to the range to conduct a ten shot average. The round transferred its energy efficiently by creating a ~4.5 inch temporary cavity. The permanent cavity created by the round was mediocre when compared with other rounds we have tested. The maximum cavity diameter of 0.6 inches is standard with our other tests. The Gold Dot penetrated a little over 16 inches, which falls into the FBI standards.

    Keep in Mind

Our tests are only a small sample of a rounds capability. We are expanding our tests in the coming months to include a more in depth analysis of each round. This will help eliminate any skewed results.

According to the FBI Handgun Wounding Factors and Effectiveness out of any police shootings no matter how many rounds are fired, you can expect only one to two torso hits.

      How sad.

A 180 gr .40s&w @ 1500 fps sounds like a dangerous anomaly or your chrono misread... Youd be hard pressed to find a 10mm 180gr load pushing those numbers safely.

I'm pretty sure I got a false reading because I was shooting too close to the chrony.

Wonder if there are any civilian statistics for justified self defense incidents?

The LEO's I know who are gun enthusiasts, guys I shoot matches with, train with... Are all damn good shots and I trust them completely.

The average LEO looks at the gun as just another part of the uniform, qualifies once or twice a year and otherwise never touches it. IMHO, they shouldn't be on the job as those officers shooting skill sets suck. i personally believe that LEO's have a professional, moral and legal duty to maintain the very highest proficiency possible with lethal force.

To answer the OP's question, most law enforcement agencies use every reliable ammunition. I use LEO Winchester Ranger and LEO Federal HST ammo myself in my CCW and HD guns.

In fairness, we have a few LEO that regularly attend our IDPA matches and are good shots and safe gun handlers..............

On the other hand, we have examples like the eight LAPD officers who fired 103 shots at the TWO little ladies delivering newspapers in a BLUE TOYOTA pick-up truck (when they were supposed to be looking for ONE large black man driving a CHARCOAL NISSAN pick-up,, and only hitting one of the women twice, that's an abysmal 1.94%......................

No way that round is going that fast. Check the chronograph. -- Shoot a mag through it.

Yep, 9mm Ranger T's and .45 HST for my carry and HD guns.

                            Same as LAPD.

Gun Runnerz you should do another melee ballistic gel video.

It would be cool if you did one with different types of knives and different types of cuts, slash cuts, stabs, etc.

Maybe like, a 3 or 4 inch pocket knife, a ka-bar, and a machete? That would be a cool video.
