    Gun Vault Moisture...

    Hi All,
I just purchased a 10 gun safe from Turners a few weeks back. I have a various number of fire arms in it, supplies and ammo. The vault is located in the garage in an area away from the coast and other moisture sources. About 2 weeks ago I put a Dry-Z-Air moisture device http://www.drytheair.com/xcart/store..._Crystals.html in the safe for the heck of it. I did not think I had any moisture to really worry about. HOLY COW, I open the safe yesterday and there was 1-inch of water in the bottom of the Dry-Z-Air catch basin... REALLY suprised me... Just an FYI. We do not want our precious firearms to rust... Any other related stories out there?...

This is exactly why I keep my safe indoors.

If you consider the temperature differential between day and night, AND the cold concrete floor with warm walls and low airflow, the garage is a gun's worst enemy!

I have my safe in a closet, downstairs. Very rarely does the temperature vary more than five degrees up or down. Despite this, I still have to recharge my silica gel packs every two months.

ETA: While having SOMETHING to lock up your guns with is nice... it really helps to have a fireproof safe instead of a gun vault. Once my safe is closed, the gelpacks only have to deal with the moisture that crept in while the door was open.

What was the device that looks like a frezzer bag and catches water? There was a pic on this site awhile back.

WOW!! Water in the safe!! NOT good!! 1/3 of my garage is set up for 'The Bunker' I'm about 600yds from the bay (San Leandro Washington Manor area) and I don't have a moisture problem or a rust problem in any of my 3 safes.. I don't even run silica gel packs. But all of my safes sit on 1/4" plywood the size of each bottom...

Don't spill any of that "water" from the Dry-Z-Air anywhere, it is corrosive.

Thanks for the info... Yea, the "water" was kind of syrupy

My problem is I do not have an area to place the safe in the house, house (wife) rules. What else can I do to protect my investment? I will install plywood under the safe though.
            Thanks,

Everyone will have a certain amout of water in the air, and you don't need to store your firearms in a bone-dry atmosphere to protect them... it's actually bad for the wood to be kept in completely dry conditions....

Guitar collectors will often keep a small aquarium in a room full of displayed guitars. If the wood dries out, necks can warp, paint will check... I know that's just guitars, but humidity-free isn't all that it's cracked up to be.

If you clean and oil your firearms at normal intervals, once every 3-6 months, and don't have any rust issues, then silica or a dehumidifier probably isn't necessary.

The essence of Western civilization is the Magna Carta, not the Magna Mac. The fact that non-Westerners may bite into the later has no implications for their accepting the former.

EDIT 2020: To be fair that seems to apply to many Westerners also.

Hey, I live next to the ocean and I'm not rich enough to buy a dehumidifier; Humboldt county: 215% humidity. I got a walking closet/vault with a small container of "Dry-Air" and it works fine.
