FLIR ONE (Thermal Imaging) at the range

I recently purchased the FLIR ONE thermal imaging attachment for the iPhone.
I had my daughter film me at the range firing:

• S&W 625 JM Custom .45 ACP
• Springfield Armory M1911A1 Loaded
• H&K USP .45 ACP with Streamlight red laser
• Sig 522 .22 LR

Next time I will take my shotgun.

I also attached the phone to my Inteliscope mount on an AR but as of now, it's only a viewer/recorder.

Inteliscope shows the FLIR ONE mounted in the Pro Mount on their web page. Inteliscope. Wait for the page to cycle to slide 6Maybe they will partner with FLIR and merge the Inteliscope app with the FLIR ONE.

If you are walking, does the FLIR create a decent image or do you need to be stationary????

I uploaded videos of my dog at the dog park at 8:30 PM (full dark).
Also uploaded a video of my daughter at the park.

It's best stationary or slow. I do have some footage of driving. My daughter drove while I filmed out the passenger window to thoroughly embarrass her.

The processor is a little slow and probably the CMOS read-out integrated circuit (ROIC) are basic or otherwise underdeveloped.

It's to be expected for a GEN 1 device that is not cryogenically cooled.

I'm not disappointed; I knew it would be a stepping stone.

A bit of sentimental value for me. In 1990/1991 the thermal in the Bradley was integrated, gas cooled and probably ran $100k. The range was more than 3000 meters in the desert sky. I could identify rodents at 100 meters and people to 1k.

And don't get me started on the miracle of the GPS.

There is a device for the Android called Therm-app. It does have good range and I believe several lenses. It's an adjustable attachment rather than a case so no worries for the different Android sizes. Downfall: $1k. But you can clearly ID subjects to 100 meters and cars, etc further.


Android Therm-app I would be tempted to buy it if I were an Android owner. Tempted. The $1k is a bit over the limit for me for a gadget.

When you star up the FLIR ONE, you have to press down on a momentary slide to power up, then calibrate.

So from opening your iPhone to seeing an image/feed is about 10 seconds.

This is not a ready-to-go defensive tool.

As far as rolling around in the dirt, I suspect that it will lose calibration very quickly. And the lenses/sensor would for sure get dirty. It's not fragile and the lenses are recessed a decent depth into the case but I wouldn't let it get dirty or risk a scratch.

I'm actually using it at work in my lab to spot heat build up on motherboards, chipsets, power supplies. So it's a tax write off.

I'll film some more tonight.

Another very useful purpose is picking up tracks over organic terrain. Walking on grass or soil and wet surfaces will show a variation in temperature outlining footprints, areas where objects have moved or where something has laid down.

I'm going to record my twin nephew (brats) while antagonizing them and see if their heads get hotter.

Great idea: when I come home from work I'll look at my wife to gauge if she's had a rough day and about to take it out on me. Then I'll pretend to get a call from "work" and leave.

This is a really fun device.

Is FLIR considering integration with Inteliscope?
I understand if there is hesitation.
The mediatards and hoplophobes will be screaming about the Predator monster lurking in every child's closet.

If you don't mind lower res this can see heat on smartphone for about $200. Not good for sight but other uses like leaks from walls etc.

Other fire departments across the United States have expressed interest in Jackson's Google Glass setup. One wants to take it to the next level and link a thermal imaging camera to Glass customized to work with oxygen masks. Then firefighters could have partial vision through smoke and darkness

Therm-App can see pretty much further - that's for sure. Three times the price of a FLIR ONE but many more times clearer. I heard another company Seek Thermal will also be releasing their version for both iPhone (5 or 6 unknown) and Android this Fall. Hopefully with the quality of Therm-App and the pricing of a FLIR ONE.

The beauty of FLIR or NVG is that should something sound off in your yard or street at night.... you can look out and see what is there... if anything....

Without illuminating your position and letting the entire area know you are awake and have a big flashlight

I worked that summer at a local theater and saw Predator dozens of times.

Back when Schwarzenegger wasn't a tool, Jesse Ventura wasn't a lying poser and action movies were in their prime.

I would never in a million years have thought this would happen some day.

Without a hood or rubber cup, the screen does light up your face like a Clark Griswold's Christmas tree.

Without a hood, it would be best too look around corners or a ghetto periscope.

The beauty of FLIR or NVG is that should something sound off in your yard or street at night.... you can look out and see what is there... if anything....

Without illuminating your position and letting the entire area know you are awake and have a big flashlight

I find the color version confusing. But one colors with shades good resolution is nice.
