Storing ammo

If you're looking at long term storage, put them in long term storage containers.
If you plan on shooting it in the next year or so, don't worry about it.

I generally like all my ammo loose or in mags and in cans.

I just bought a bunch of ammo - 2k rounds - that were shipped in very sturdy boxes. The rounds are on 20 and 50 round individual boxes.

I'm out of steel ammo cans. Is it OK to store them in the boxes as is or should I get some more cans to store them.

Uncle Sam's has used 50 cal cans currently on sale for $9.99, with free shipping on $100 orders (but you will have to pay sales tax).



IIRC it came out to less than $11/can when you bought 11.



For that kind of money, why take chances?

I have always been just fine with his Grade 2 stuff. I would not recommend going to Grade 3.

You can store ammo just about anywhere in just about anything. You can get married, have kids and have them all graduate from college ... and that ammo you stored from your previous life will still go bang when you need it.

I've put away 12 gauge shotgun shells in an ammo can, 10 years later the shells were rusted and corroded. Go figure!

I keep my ammo in ammo cans or in my house. Ammo is a really hardy product I bought some .22 ammo a while back at the Ventura gun show that the seller said he had bought in the 70"s and it functioned perfectly in my dads mp15-22. Now if only I could find more for $3 a box I would be stoked.

I store mine loose in ammo cans with a couple of descant packs for good measure, I have stuff that I got from my Grandfather after he passed away back in 1984, all of it military issue and it still shoots just fine.

I have a few plastic ammo cans but they're really more for convenience of transporting ammo to the range than for storing at home. For shotgun ammo, I leave them in the cardboard boxes they're shipped in.

For my AR ammo, I load them into stripper clips, then I store them into empty boxes that contained 25 rounds birdshots previously. I've found that you can fit 13 loaded stripper clips into a single box, giving you 130 rounds. I buy birdshots by the case because wife and I shoot trap almost every weekend, and you can pack 10 of these boxes into a case. Very easy to stack and store.

Bay area moisture?

If your ammo can is air tight, you probably sealed moisture inside the can when you put in those ammo. Without any means of escaping the can, the moisture simply remained in the can, happily corroding all the metal on the shotshells.

I've got ammo cans with silica gel desiccant tins that can be oven dried. Then I've got a "shooting stock" shelf with some of each caliber. When I buy more I put it in the cans and move some of the older ammo to the shelf.

you can store ammo in boxes of origin if you choose to do so. keep ammo in cool, temperature-steady environment. i store most ammo in mil ammo boxes in separate, locked areas of my home. over the years i've managed to acquire a rare mil ammo box collection, one box at a time.

when you stumble upon those old commercial ammo boxes that ammo comes in when sold at retail, don't throw them away without knowing what you have or don't have. many of these boxes are collectible and have some value (see heading of 'rare ammunition box' on ebay).
