    Most likely the reason is its for right handed shooters the left side of the rifle is against your belly or side when its opened.

    Can you imigine the hard time you would have opening the buttstock.

    It would have to fold away from the receiver of the rifle and toward the back in a counter clock wise action. Your body would be in the way. Unless your left handed that is.

    With it folding to the right there is nothing in the way.

    thats my thought on it.

    My experience is with the FN FAL paratrooper model 50.63

      I guess you haven't handled one before OR you are a lefty...If you are right handed, it is natural, ergonomic and convenient to fold and unfold it on the right side of the gun...
