The owner of a San Pablo gift shop shot and killed one of two robbers during a holdup attempt Tuesday, the latest in a spate of heists at the business, police said.

The shooting happened shortly after 5 p.m. when two men stormed into A&L Posters at 14650 San Pablo Ave., said San Pablo police Lt. Mark Foisie.

One of the assailants jumped over the counter with a shotgun and was shot dead by the owner, Foisie said. The man's name was not immediately released.

The other would-be robber fled out the front door.

The owner of the business has been robbed at least twice before, police said. About two months ago, he was robbed at the business. Within the past year, he was robbed, beaten and had a weapon fired near his face, Foisie said.

Suspects have been arrested in at least one of the earlier cases, police said.

The shooting is the latest in the East Bay in which store employees have fought back against robbers.

In April, an Oakland liquor store owner shot and wounded a would-be robber who had shot him. That same month, an Oakland store clerk shot and wounded one of two suspected robbers.

In April 2007, the owner of an East Oakland pizzeria shot and killed a would-be robber armed with an assault rifle. A month later, a clerk at an Oakland liquor store shot and killed a 17-year-old who had fired first.

A store owner shot a robbery suspect Monday night in Martin Luther King Park as the owner was being assaulted by six people, Bakersfield police reported.

Two suspects stole beer from Central Cali Market, 801 E. California Ave., at about 8:56 p.m. when the owner, Samrith Vong, chased them to the park, police said.

There, the suspects and four others began assaulting the owner with a metal scooter, police said.

As he was being assaulted, the owner drew a handgun and shot one of the suspects. The injured suspect was identified as 19-year-old Raul Garza who was taken to a hospital for treatment, police said.

Garza was also arrested on suspicion of robbery and assault with a deadly weapon, police said.

Two other juvenile suspects were also arrested, and police are looking for the other three.

Regarding possible charges against the owner, BPD Sgt. Greg Terry had little to say.

"It’s something we will look at in the investigation. The investigation will determine that."

I went to a Jr. College there. The location is next to West Richmond ( you don't want to live in west richmond), in fact I use to work the night shift down there at a gas station and it was wild and that brings to mind one night this dude walks in and he is bleeding from stab wounds and I ask him if he wants me to call an ambulance he tells me no buys a beer and leaves with some friend. That is what it is like down there.

I heard this on the noon news today about how this "must be some kind of mistake" him being such a good kid and all. My knee-jerk reaction was anger, but the more I thought about it, the more I was saddened. Not for the idiot with the shotgun, but for a culture that allows armed robbery to be a rite-of-passage for young males. Joyriding used to hold a similar position.

A year or so back, there was another incident where a group of teens were shot at (I think at least one was killed) by their victim of an armed robbery attempt. One response from the teens family was "they were just having a little fun".

I don't think I will ever understand that mentality.

just to throw something out from left field... if anyone has seen scarface the movie, it's the same mentality. you want to own it all... do anything you want no matter what the cost. it's no surprise so many rappers mention the movie or tony montana.

typical master morality... except i guess it's coming from the socioeconomic bottom instead of the socioeconomic top... which just goes to show that empowerment can come from anywhere.

Wrong! I don't care if it's a 95 year old Grandma coming with a shotgun, she gets 2 in the chest.

Humans have the ability to learn. Why can't they learn that the "Gangsta Lifestyle" leads to prison or death. Ask any of these "oppressed peoples" how many people they know who have been killed or incarcerated. Then ask why don't they change.

Two murders in less than 5 months doesn't sound THAT bad. What if it happens in a mall. If these dirtbags want to kill each other off, great let them just don't leave a mess to clean up. When innocent people are involved that is the tragety. I don't feel bad for the family of this kid. He was killed while commiting a felonius crime. Good shoot, unfortunatly this guy who shot him has to deal with legal system. Possibly a lawsuit and the moral issue of killing another person. That is the sad part.

it's good to hear about people successfully defending themselves, but the first thought that came to my mind when I read the first article was that he must have a fast holster presentation. He shot the criminal as he jumped over the counter. That or the criminal was stupid enough to jump towards the pointed gun...
