Roadtrip: Denver to SF Bay Area ...

Callifornia resident returning from a driving trip to Denver and I'm looking for places to shoot along the way. We are using the route of 70 to Rifle (hehe) then take 40 to Salt Lake City and finally 80 back to the Bay Area. I would love to shoot in all four states: CO, UT, NV, and CA.

Ideas? This could be federal land or shooting ranges. I brought AR-15s and a handgun.

    Let me know. TIA.

Take Hwy 50, "the lonelyest hwy in the USA". Nothing out there but Area 51 and some jackrabbits.

Make sure you put bullet buttons on your AR's. And 10rnd or less mags.

Just drive a borrowed white 1970 HEMI Challenger as fast as you can, do what the guy on the radio tells you to do and take lots of speed. And watch out for the bulldozers at the end of the road! Trust me on this one.

Ha Ha ! I see what you did there ^^

OP I've made that drive but cant help you with shooting spots. However you might want to hang around Utah long enough to establish residency, then go on Utah Gun Exchange and find all the off ca roster guns you want, FTF purchase, and then return to Ca and re-establish residency. Probably not that easy but UGE is like Craigslist for guns.

Careful of Colorado's new laws. Some of them might be worse than California's, and stopping to go shooting might not meet the standard of "passing through" protected by FOPA.

              Thanks for the feedback.

I'm a Califormia resident with CA legal firearms, so no worries there. No, I can't stop in Utah long enough to get residency unless that can occur in 24 -hours. ;-)

I checked Colorado gun laws and nothing looks scary, though I'll be careful and may just wait until I get to Utah.

I'll also look out for gay hitchhikers and a naked woman on a motorcycle. One can't be too careful.

I would suggest you shoot at public ranges. The comeradery of shooters in other states is always informative and fun .

Las Vegas has a large public range and its worth seeing .
In Colorado I've shot at the dragon mans range. Utah has ranges in Kaysville, St George and others .

In Colorado be sure to eat at the shooters grill in Rifle .
Since there are cute girls wearing sidearms, its suggested you give thought to impressing these gals.
I'm planning on a stainless 1911 with ivory grips, custom checkering, slide milled flat and Bo mar sights by Jimmy Hoag .
I will carry it in a Kramer IWB sharkskin holster help up by Kramer sharkskin belt.
I will have the mag out and bolt back just in case my waitress wants to fondle it !

                Only kidding guys !

the 80 freeway will take you right through Salt Lake City. There are several indoor ranges inside the city. There's a cool little gun store called "GET SOME" that has an indoor range which I've been to. About 10 mins south from SLC there's a huge Scheels and Cabela's. You could also check some of Nutnfancy's local haunts if you're into that (Like Impact guns, and then the store that PFI Guy owns. There's others in SLC, Lehi, South Jordan, check some of his videos for more locations...there's a bunch)

Also along the 80 there's a bunch of towns through Nevada but as far as I know most of these are casino towns I don't know what kind of shooting is available. Definitely stop at the big Scheels and Cabelas in Sparks/Reno area. There's a bunch of ranges in Reno too I just don't know anything about them

Check with the BLM in each state. They usually have maps that show where you can shoot and what areas are restricted. They will usually answer emails if you have questions and you may be able to find BLM offices on your travel route.

Another thought is to contact the Sheriff's department in the county you want to shoot your guns and inquire about open country target shooting. You can do this before you go or while you're traveling.

Many sheriffs and deputies in NV, UT, and CO enjoy shooting and hunting and will usually help you out. Just be sure to pick up all of your trash before you leave.

                    Have a good trip.
