I have a 14 gun safe with a golden rod running across the bottom door opening. I recently put a reptile humidity gauge on the back wall and was shocked when it read just under 60%! Is that normal? I live about 25 miles from the beach, but my house has a wide open ocean view so we always get the ocean breeze too. The safe is located in the garage. Any thought? Thanks

Ok, just as I thought. I pulled the same gauge out and put it on the door outside and it's dropping like a rock. It's below 50 alreadyWelcome to OT, where hypocrisy is King, outrage is Queen and the Kingdom is on the shores of the Denial River.

I even have a couple of those silica packets in there and they aren't even damp.Welcome to OT, where hypocrisy is King, outrage is Queen and the Kingdom is on the shores of the Denial River.

That is not optimal. I'd wait for the Santa Ana conditions that are inevitable in the fall months and open up your garage and safe and let the dry air permeate your garage and safe. Avoid water based lubricants in your firearms as that could create humidity.I have a 14 gun safe with a golden rod running across the bottom door opening. 55% or less is idealComment

Good tip on the water based lubes. Ill check to see if i have any. Outside the safe it is reading about 30% right now. I think I'm going to leave the door open until the inside is the same as the outside and measure again.Welcome to OT, where hypocrisy is King, outrage is Queen and the Kingdom is on the shores of the Denial River.

I keep mine between 20-30%Comment

Mine usually runs 40-50% depending on the season. I never had rust issues with a golden rod. In fact I pulled the Gahendra out of the back of the safe and it has not formed any rust in 2 years.sigpic

Josh, those gauges are notoriously inaccurate. I wouldnt put a lot of faith in 'em. Also check the seal on the door - if you have cracks or imperfections they may be letting in enough ambient air to negate any rods or packets.
Im far from an expert as I have never taken readings inside my safe so YMMV.Comment

My humidity gauge inside my safes read at "SoCal" levels.
I've never had the slightest rust issue in several decades now. I'm just lucky I guess. I will say that every time I remove a gun from the safe, it gets wiped down with an oily rag and my finger prints are never on them before putting them bag inside the "hanger." Maybe that's why I've never had issues in 40 some years of gun storage where I live.
