    Clark Co, NV registration...

My daughter is attending UNLV (2nd year) and is living off campus with two other athletes in a house. She took her guns (Browning 1911-22 and AR15} with her.

While the state of Nevada does not require guns to be registered, Clark County does and gives new residents 60 days to register handguns at the police station.

My daughter went to register the Browning and they asked for her drivers license. When she produced her CA DL they said "we can't register a firearm unless you have a NV DL." Even after explaining that she was a student she was told she would have to get a NV license to register it with them.

So after 60 days she would be breaking the law if she didn't get a NV license and register the handgun. Well, it turns out she is going to stay the next two summers (instead of coming home) so she was already planning on getting a NV DL and establishing residency, but as a student she is not required to do so.

I just find it interesting that when they implement these stupid laws they never have enough foresight to anticipate some of the most common situations.
The American Republic will endure until the day Congress discovers that it can bribe the public with the public's money.

It would be more beneficial to dump the ca license.

Yet the state will continue to charge her out of state tuition no matter if she moves there or not.

What about a NV ID card? Then she can still have her CA DL and the NV ID for the registration.

She's not a resident if she is a student and has not formally established residency. My son has been in Reno and "The University" for 4 years and has maintained his CA residency.

IMO no need to register the handgun if the law regulates residents.

I know it's bummer, since the law was written for new/existing residents she technically isn't breaking the law.

Or you can gift her an AK/AR pistol. Those do not need to be registered, since they aren't concealable.

OP, I think there's something wrong with you or you've been living in CA too long to notice how things have deteriorated here. You should be happy for your daughter getting a NV driver's license and attaining residency in NV. Many people here in CA want to do this but can't for various personal and family reasons. That's like your daughter winning a million dollars in the lottery and you start complaining about how they give her all the money at one time and it's too much to carry.

With NV residency, tuition should be lower, her income taxes will be lower, and she can buy any gun she wants. If she decides at a later date the purchase wasn't a wise one, she can give them to you. (hint, hint)

                          Why stay a CA resident?

There has been no advantage for him to establish his residency. It will not effect the cost of his tuition and he hates waiting in the DMV line.

He is in the process of making the change now that he nearing the end of his schooling and it looks like he'll stay in the area. He keeps his guns at home here as we did not feel he could secure them in his current living arrangement.

I can't wait to see his face when he walks in picks out a gun and walks out 20 minutes later with his purchase.

Not really complaining about it, just found it strange that they didn't take into account a large out-of-state population that is in Clark Co. temporarily for 4 months or so at a time.

She doesn't need in state tuition as she is on both athletic and academic scholarships. She is still two years away from being able to purchase handguns that she may or may not want to keep.
