OMG! Calif Sheriffs are raffling AR-15s!

The OC Register is up in arms:

Perhaps the most important thing to know is this: It’s perfectly legal for a police charity to raffle off a semiautomatic rifle and a semiautomatic pistol.

Whether it’s entirely appropriate, however, may be another story.
I dunno, sounds good to me!

Several deputy sheriffs’ associations – including those in Orange County and San Diego – sold tickets for the rifle raffle on behalf of another organization (one ticket for $5, five tickets for $20). The grand prize: An AR-15 rifle which, in some incarnations in years past, fell under the federal assault weapons ban, and was on the failed 2013 Assault Weapons Ban’s no-no list.

Second prize: A Beretta 92FS pistol,
Awesome! Where do I sign up?

I'd like to thank the OC Register for bringing these raffles to my attention. I need to buy some tickets!

Calguns gets a mention in the article.

Host a firearm buy back to get guns off the "streets". But then raffle off a "AW" as they refer to it which they hate so much, and a handgun.

For Sale: AR500 Lvl III+ ASC Armor

Some law enforcement officials have expressed extreme discomfort with the availability of semiautomatic weapons, saying they’re the weapons of choice for gang members and drug dealers, and are all too often used against police officers.
Heh, I thought, AR-15s and Beretta 92FS are also used by the police. Are they accusing the PDs of engaging in drug dealing and gang activities?

I just can't stand the sheer stupidity of such scare tactics. Then again, when used on stupid people, it probably works.

              I like..

Second prize: A Beretta 92FS pistol, which one gun broker describes as “the most trusted and tested personal defense weapon in history ... with a short recoil, delayed blowback system for faster cycle times, exceptional accuracy and greater reliability.”

I think an important point was overlooked:
"If a member of the public wins, however, they get the cash value of the rifle, but not the rifle itself".

Good luck selling tickets to people who can read.
God may have made men, but Samuel Colt made them equal.

Send me pics of your: Colt Detective Special, AMT Hardballer, pre-64 Winchester Model 70. I'm looking for them.

...until I read that part. WTF?? That makes no sense at all, and surely defeats the purpose of the article since apparently guns ARE NOT actually being raffled to the public.

The local LE agencies here raffle guns all the time. This is some SoCal nonsense (no offense to the So-Calgunners).

Could the raffle off the stuff they got in the buy-back?

Might be rigged anyhow so a family member or friend wins. Count me out.

Ticket sales for the raffle began in April, and were open to both law enforcement and the public. If a member of the public wins, however, they get the cash value of the rifle, but not the rifle itself.
