308 barrel nut wrench have the same teeth as a 556??

    Can someone confirm or deny?

I'm looking to build a few more 5.56/300blk rifles in the near future and plan on getting a nut wrench. But I also have a 308 DPMS pattern AR rifle.

When I was building the LR308 IIRC the teeth and everything of the 5.56 and 308 wrench were the same, but the 5.56 didn't work for me because the 308 barrel was too think around the chamber.

Well now I'm looking to buy a wrench and figured if the 308 will fit both, maybe kill 2 birds with 1 stone and buy a 308 barrel nut for my 5.56 rifles and if need be in the future have that nut wrench be able to work on my LR308 if I ever need to disassemble it.

So can anyone tell me or remind me if the 308/5.56 wrenches are the exact same, aside from the center hole diameter for the barrel? And the 308 should work for both?

Yes I understand it is only $20 a wrench, but why spend $40 when I can spend $20 and have a single universal nut for ALL of my AR rifles 308/5.56? And let's face it, $20 is $20 no matter how you look at it. We all know if we can save a few bucks and not hurt anything we would all do it.

Yes depending what kind of rail you buy and barrel nut, a standard DPMS multi took will work for 308/223/ platforms.

Yes I used a Tapco AR15 wrench to remove the barrel nut from my DPMS .308 Oracle:

That tool fit over your 308 chamber?

What's the diameter of the barrel hole in that wrench? The (2) 5.56 armorors tools I used stuck on the chamber and required modding the barrel hole for them to fit around the chamber of the 308. Or did you have to modify your wrench?

I know exactly what the problem is the standard barrel nut that works with a Delta ring has teeth in the front towards the muzzle and the wrench doesn't need to fit over the body of the nut, the special barrel nuts may have the teeth in the back towards the bolt and the wrench has to fit over the body of the barrel nut. It depends on the rail setup thats why many of them supply a barrel wrench when you get a special rail the armorers tools are made for GI/delta ring set ups.
I took the DPMS barrel nut off my Oracle .308 with it and got a Midwest Industries SS Series free float rail which I put a link to below. The Midwest rail also included a barrel nut wrench and their proprietary barrel nut I can't remember if the Tapco tool fit over the MI barrel nut but probably didn't. I'm showing 1.549 on the opening past the dimples, the smaller inside part is 1.273 I can text or email pictures of the wrenches and micrometer.
