A blogger added up the deer license sales in just a handful of states and arrived at a striking conclusion:

There were over 600,000 hunters this season in the state of Wisconsin ....

Allow me to restate that number: 600,000!
Over the last several months, Wisconsin's hunters became the eighth largest army in the world.
(That's more men under arms than in Iran . More than France and Germany combined. )
These men, deployed to the woods of a single American state, Wisconsin, to hunt with firearms, and NO ONE WAS KILLED.
That number pales in comparison to the 750,000 who hunted the woods of Pennsylvania and Michigan's 700,000 hunters, ALL OF WHOM HAVE RETURNED HOME SAFELY.

Isoroku Yamamoto, Commander in Chief of the Imperial Japanese Navy during WWII has been often (and almost certainly falsely, since it is not recorded in any documents) as saying "You cannot invade the mainland United States. There would be a rifle behind every blade of grass." Even unsubstantiated though, it demonstrates that your premise has been around for a while.



I am too lazy to check your sources. Does it differentiate between rifle, handgun, black powder, and bow hunting; or are we just assuming that all hunters utilize rifles?

If the hypothesis is that "guns kill" or that "more guns = more dead," it's irrelevant what they were doing with those firearms. Remember, the anti gun movement wants to take away guns in general because they supposedly cause bad behavior.

OP, I haven't taken the time to check the number of hunters that you quoted but assume that they are at least close to being correct. Now if we also take into consideration the number of non hunters that own guns (target shooters and self defense), I would think that gun owners have a pretty good chance of out-voting the anti gun crowd if we take the time to get our votes in for the right candidate. My point is that our real power is in our right to vote in the politicians that are interested in saving our constitutional right to own guns.

Hunted there one season and it was surreal. The night before it was the lead story in the news, school was closed and families were going out together.

Because of CWD they had a thing called "earn a buck".

You had to shoot a doe before you could take your buck, then you could shoot more doe.

Anyway, opening morning sounded like a battlefield. Everyone shot semi-auto and it was perfectly ok to shoot an animal that was still running forward after being wounded.

There were enough rounds flying around that I crawled back to the cabin and called it a week-end. That was the weekend that a guy had a shoot-out with a family over the tree stand he was in (wasn't his). Several men died.

I never went back.
