Indeed ... this is the correct answer
You would not have enough time to grab anything at this distance ... with a fellow who wants to bash your brains out and charging at you.
If you include the second or so of hesitation ... the WTF??? factor ... or usually more than a second. Then reaching down to grab something. The assailant will be right on top of you ... just where he wants to be. He will then start by straddling your chest then pounding your face until you go unconscious.
A few options here:
1. Pick up the Garand, and use it Hillbilly style ... (like a club)
2. Get into a defensive posture, (well grounded), move off the center-line, and attempt to defend your self with fists, elbows, knees and legs.
3. Dodging out of the way may buy you some time ... but you better be good at this.
The problem with #2 and #3 ... is it takes a massive amount of hands on training to get proficient at this ... and even then, it may not work ... (usually because of that mental hesitation at the beginning).
If I could ... I would try and pickup the Garand and attempt to use it as a club.

One of the bodies suddenly rises up between 25 and 50 feet away from you, it turns out he is the sole survivor of your Ghost Gun that was shooting 30 clips per second only because he tripped, fell, and knocked unconscious long enough for your fusillade to end. Your enemy charges at you - what rifle does your Ghost gun look like?
