Flying a 10/22 (disassembled).

I'm flying back to MO for my annual summer family visit. I want to take my 10/22 for my son to shoot while we're back there. I've flown pistols many times. Lock them in a hard case, declare them. life is good.

The ruger 10/22 will fit in a 40" hard case that will fit in a large suitcase so I can do it the same way.

But that takes a lot of room. Instead, the Stock comes off with one screw, barrel with 2, scope with 2 and now I have a receiver that will fit in the smallest pistol case. wrap the barrel and stock in clothes and it should be easy to stay under the 50 lbs.

I'm a little concerned that uneducated airline or TSA agents will see the gun parts not locked up and get confused. of course these parts are not "firearms" and I can fly with them all day long. But it would be a hassle if I got stopped and couldn't get on the plane because of a different interpretation of the law....

Has anyone ever done this or have any inside knowledge that this will or will not work?

I've done this to transport shotguns and rifles, and I avoided any issues with TSA by using a hard sided suit case. The receivers, stocks, other parts are wrapped in bubble wrap or clothes and locked in the hard sided suitcase. If you are flying out of SFO, there's this very fat woman inspector who likes to go through everything in the suitcase. She'll take everything out of the suitcase in stages and inspect every gun and gun part. She's never told me something's prohibited, but it takes about 30 minutes for her to do what other inspectors take 5 minutes to do. Oh yes, you'll likely get her if you fly United out of SFO for some reason.

Thanks DWTT. I'm flying US Air out of SAN. I don't have a hard sided suitcase. So do you lock the reciever inside a seperate hard case or do you just lock the hardsided suitcase as your "TSA approved" locked hard case.

I could just buy a pelican case to use as my suitcase, put the gun and clotes in it, and be done with it.

Sorry Jerry, I could be mistaken but, I think you're the one who is uneducated here. The facts as I recall them are that any gun part (not just the receiver) is required to be treated the same as a firearm when flying. Contact your carrier and get a print out of their requirements as well as Federal requirements and follow both of them.

Edit: per TSA website it looks like parts are prohibited in carry ons but not checked baggage.

Edit: Make sure you pack a well lubed extra large adult toy next to the gun barrel. If you can get one with a remote, get it. Don't forget to tape it for you tube.

Hmmmmmmm. Better do some reading. I may have been assuming that TSA rules were similar to transfer, shipping, buying, etc rules that only apply to the receiver and everything else is free. That's why we have these forums. Thanks buddy. Jerry

Jerry-You can send it USPS to yourself, for your use in another state. My father travels back and forth to Montana and does it. You can also just get a locking rifle case and check it on the plane. The extra baggage charge will probably be the same price as shipping.

Reading the TSA website I see that "gun parts" are included in the regulation so must be locked up so my original suggestion of locking up only the receiver has been confirmed as a NO GO. Scopes are an exception and can even be carried on. Make sense when you realize many scopes are worth 3x the value of the gun and easily lost, damaged, or stolen.

So I could pop the stock off and not it fits nicely into a 30 x 8" gun case but can't seem to find one of those. I could buy a large rolling 2-gun case and just use it for my luggage with the clothes, etc.

But I'm leaning toward just shipping it tomorrow and carrying on all the luggage. Shipping is less than the $50 charge for the baggage anyway. I'm finding some people online that disagree that it is legal to ship a gun to yourself but when challenged, it appears they are confusing handgun and long gun rules.

Do you have an authoritative reference that confirms that it is legal? Getting a weapons charge for illegal shipping would run a man's recreational gun use future, especially in California.

If I don't check a bag, that complicates the ammo situation. I would just pick up the ammo in MO except there may not be any 22 ammo there either....I think the Ammo has to go UPS ground if I remember correctly and have to drive to the UPS service center....

USPS website, see for yourself. I would print it out and bring it to the post office in case they give you a hard time. I have done it before with a hard case. I put a lock on it and wrapped a few bands of duct tape around it. They should only ask if it is flammable or perishable, not what it is. I even shipped a stock in a Ruger gun box once and nobody said a word.

I've used the suitcase as my hardsided case. I've never had any problems with this arrangement. I have a large suitcase that meets the maximum size for the US airlines sold under the Sharper Image brand, and has worked for the last 5 flights I've made in December 2013, May 2014, and last week.

It is legal, and always has been, to ship a weapon to yourself.

You can use USPS, UPS, or Fed-EX to ship long guns...pay for insurance and adult signature at the destination. Ship UPS or Fed-EX at a service center.

Handguns cannot go through the USPS unless you have an ffl.

Ammo goes UPS or Fed-Ex Ground. IATA rules allow you to check baggage with up to 5 kilos (about 11 pounds) of ammo. It needs to be in factory boxes or something close (e.g., MTM plastic boxes). It does not need to be declared.

Don't be surprised it it costs you more to ship it there and back than it would to go buy a hardsided case that you can just check in at the airport.
