    Shooting range visit in Pa.

I visited my old home town in SW Pa. a couple weeks ago. Two of my nieces asked me to take them shooting so we took a Rossi pump .22 rifle and headed to the state game land range.

Back in the day (early 70s) I used to shoot at the same range, sans overhead cover. The range was free to use to anyone with no limitations that I was ever aware of.

Now it requires a current Pa. hunting license or an annual fee of $30 for anyone 16+ years of age. Only 3 rounds of ammunition may be in a magazine (6 for a handugn). I asked a young man how long that restriction had been in place and he said for at least the 8 years he had been coming to the range.

It is unmonitored and up to someone to be the range officer. Everyone was safe and called mutual cease fire for target checking. I was there on a weekday and there was never more than 6 shooters present at one time.

The magazine limitation seemed to keep turnover quick, no one but us stayed for more than an hour.

My sister in law bought mini mags at a Cabelas for $8.49 a box of 100. I didn't see any .22s for sale when I was there but all other ammo was plentiful and cheaper than in CA.

My in-laws live out in the country but the area is building up rapidly. We saw these critters across the street from their house one morning.

Gun clubs abound and gun shops are frequent.

We stopped in Bedford Pa on the way. A quiet little town that we added to our list of possible retirement locations. They do get lots of snow in the winter though!

I'm pretty sure that I used to shoot at that range in the early 70's too when I was growing up in Pittsburgh. Too bad about the fees and 3 round limitation now. I'd trade away the overhead cover in a second to get back to the good ole days... I miss how simple life used to be.

The range is in Wexford; I79 goes right by it now. In the old days we took route 8 to get there.

Yup, that's it. Not far from Allison Park where I grew up.
