The original Trail Boss was a RSR special make from S&W. Sold between 1996-1999, a reported 500 were made. It was in the following configuration:

S&W 629-4, SS, 3" MagnaPort bbl, fluted cylinder, .44Mag, W/O rear adjustable and Red ramp front sights, Hogue one piece rubber grip w/small S&W logo and a lanyard stud, "Trail Boss" in script on the right side plate, case hardened target hammer and smooth combat trigger, RSRXXXX serial numbered on bottom of the grip frame.

The Trail Boss made subsequent appearances in different forms, including wood grips, no lanyard stud, non-fluted cylinder, non-MagnaPort bbl, Trail Boss on bbl, etc. RSR currently catalogs two models and S&W has a 629ES.

I bought mine new in February 1997 as a back-up for big game hunting. I always thought it great for that purpose.

          Just shot one last weekend

My buddy bought it ten years ago. LOUD! Never shoot it without ear protection.
Nice to carry and pretty darned accurate. Even with the porting it's a bit of a handfull. I prefer heavier, quieter, less recoiling guns.

It's my main backpacking gun. I friggin LOVE IT. And yes, it's loud...snappy recoil (for a .44) but the unfluted cylinder does a nice job damping the worst of the recoil.

Great gun - great balance. Get some real grips (Eagles or Nills) and you're good to go.

If you are introduced to a 3" 29/629, you'll own one.

Proper grip fit is the #1 thing to be aware of. Drop the loot on something of quality that fits your hand - without this they are painful.

With a proper grip they are a handful, but they are not as harsh as you might imagine and they shoot straight. Don't be put off by the short sight radius, you can adapt to it and once you do you'll ask yourself why you didn't get one sooner.

WOW Awsome pics, i love the unfluted cylinder on that 3 inch, i currently own 3 - 44 magnums - (colt anaconda 6" barrell- very smooth action) - (SW model 29-10 - 6" barrell - woods grips) and a (SW Mountain gun - 4"barrell) which i find the best to shoot probably because of the barrell length being shorter, so i think thats why im leaning towards the snubby trail boss for a future purchase they remind me of Pit bulls for some reason.

I bought one from a family friends estate a couple years ago for my own birthday present. Its a nice gun and suprisingly manageable. After watching numerous bad guys shoot 44mags as fast as they can pull the trigger I had to try it myself with that gun it was a blast literally! Mines not that particular model I think its a 629-4 with a 3in barrel and fluted cylinder with the S&W stamped Hogue grips. I read some were there wasnt to many 3in made I dont know how true that is. Fun gun Id recommend it.

I don't have a Trail Boss, but I've carried this 629 Backpacker on the trail for nearly 20 years. I tried it with an easier to deal with grip but I keep going back to the original. Great revolver.
