    UFC fighter accidental discharge

I don't really believe in accidental discharge while cleaning your gun, that's more stupidity. Visually and physically check, duhh.

Joe Riggs was injured in a firearm accident at his Arizona home on Monday night, resulting in his withdrawal from a UFC Fight Night bout against Paulo Thiago in Brazil on Sept. 13.

I still don't understand how a negligent (not accidental) discharge can happen while cleaning a pistol.

Release the mag and rack the slide a sh**-load of times very quickly, then hold the slide open and visually inspect. It only takes a few seconds.

It doesn't happen. That is the catch all phrase because nobody wants to say " I am a dumb *** and pointed a gun at myself and pulled the trigger."

With a Glock you have to pull the trigger to field strip it. So I get that part about it happening during cleaning, but clearing the gun is way too simple for it not to be done.

not his fault, the gun discharged on its own...well, according to the well written article

While cleaning his permitted firearm (a pistol), the gun discharged, injuring his hand and upper thigh. Riggs was transported to a nearby hospital in Arizona where he is being treated by physicians. We wish Joe a speedy recovery.
maybe i only speak for myself, but, i have a slight fear of firearms, maybe more of a deep respect, which, FORCES me to take all the proper precautions when handling any of mine...i'll safety check my firearm multiple times...i could be over zealous about it, but, that's just the way I am, and, the way i've taught anyone around me who handles them

i've had people who i hand a firearm to always recheck it for themselves...WHY...because that's way it has to be around me, take nothing for granted, and, do your own safety checks regardless...im 100% confident this would never happen to me, I could never allow myself to let my guard down enough for it to happen

I find it convenient that he had an ND, right before a big return to this venue..after 14 years.

I guess he took the old adage "He shot himself in the foot" seriously, except he missed and got his hand and leg.

                        Needs more range time.

Just another idiot moron attached to a gun. At least he did not shoot an innocent person. WTF? Why would you point a loaded gun at your hand and leg? Police should have confiscated his weapon and pulled his permit for negligent discharge and unsafe handling. maybe next time he will hold his hand in front of his face and play 'peeaboo' with the muzzle.

I'm the same way. Had a guy at a gunshow get all butthurt once about me re checking the chamber after he already did. I didn't say anything rude or anything, but I didn't buy from him either....

I'm 95% sure a ND will never happen to me, but that 5% is what always makes me check just one more time....

                              +1

While dove hunting and leaving one location, I would clear the shotguns, hand them to my father, who would clear/check them again and load them in the trunk.

We then drove directly to another location and got out, reversing the process and clearing/checking the guns twice more.

Neither one of us thought it was odd or redundant or unnecessary. It's just the way you safely handle firearms.

All it takes is that one time: "I think I checked the g...."
