I call my Daughter day before yesterday, to see if my Grandson is busy she says no, and ask my GS if he'd like to spend the morning with me, with no explanation of what we do, says sure.
I tell him I will pick him up at 6A got a simple OK.
So I pick him up an off to Burger King for a quick bit to eat (as you all know young boys and food)
and while were there eating he looks at me an says PaPA what are we going to do ?
I say you remember when I told you we'd go shooting soon,, well today is that day, got a super...smile
Well first off let me say I gave him his own rifle a few years back 580 REM 22cal, but he was not allowed to go shooting till he showed he could focus on the task. ( today he'd not be allow to shoot it as his mom needed to pawn it for a few days) sad face here.
I'm sure he's not the only boy who has had trouble staying on task, girls seem very different than boy's on this issue.
Anyway back to the range, great day, cool, a little cloud cover and best of all very few people there, this is awesome for first timers.
We go through a safety test I had written up on two sheets, had him read one, while I set up, then we read out loud together and talking about each rule of shooting, also a few other things that I hope would keep him from trouble in the future, and how his 2A right's were so important to keep and protect.
This is were most kids loose it (interest) but not this guy he was right on everything....big...
...for me here, as this is what I was waiting for (FOCUS).
Now for the meat and potatoes, we pull out a Ruger 1022 TD SS with 3-9x40mm mil-dot scope.
Well you can imagine the look, it was great. so off to get familiar with it, checking safe direction and all the safety stuff, now we would rack the slide over an over for fell, then off to magazine, in & out locking bolt back safety the weapon over an over till he had it down, now 1st bullet in mag, safety on rack in the round then..........stop, and safety the weapon, flag it for down range target set up.
Some kids get board with all this info and no bang, but not this guy he is stoked, an on everything.....this is what I was waiting for, now I'm feeling really good, this is what all Fathers & Grandfather's want of they're kids IMHO
Now we get to shoot, 1 round in mag, but this time he get's to pull the trigger, BANG, and what a smile from him.
Now we off an running, full mags and shooting all the little targets we brought.
Can's flying clays breaking he was have the time of his young life.
He looks at the brick of ammo of HP, and says how many are we going to shoot..........I say as many as you want.....another big smile.
We shoot for 3 1/5 hours and he is having a blast, at this point we have a new shooter who has shown up a very nice guy come's over to talk, show us his Saiga he just finished building, Grandson eye's are popping (that's really cool he says), and we continue to shoot.
Were getting close to the end of that box now and he see's the guy fire his Saiga, wow PaPa do you think he'd mite let me shoot it, I say REALLY, he say yes, so OK let me talk to him.
The guy is super nice and all excited for the little guy and with a big SMILE say absolutely, I say to him, he must need his shoulder punched out for some reason, so I tell the guy just 1 round.
Now the little guy has to know the firearm rack the slide & know the safety, and all before he can shoot it, OK now he's ready..........BOOM....and a BIG ***** SMILE on that face, guy looks at me an I look at him we shrug expecting an ouch, but no way were getting that, so the guy say's want to shoot it again I say OK, and he gives him a full mag, the little guy had a hard time holding that rifle but that would not stop him, he fire all 10 rounds almost as fast as he could with a pretty good pattern, of course I held the weight of the weapon with front grip.
Now were done shooting and with out prompt he thanked the gentleman kindly for allowing him to shoot his firearm, and with that we pick up our trash, & pack up.
Of course we did other things that day like going out to eat and getting ice cream, and a trip to Sportsman Warehouse to maybe replace those round (no luck there) but someone had a Golden lab puppy in a basket that cleaned his face, yeah he hated that alright, for me it was a Great day.
At the end of it all that little guy turns to me and say PaPa this was the best day of my life, and I smile back and say thanks and you've got a lot more of those in your future.
And with that, we headed to his home to drop him off, as I still had things to do, Yes it was a Good day indeed...
