Three juveniles arrested for zip guns and robbery

    NEW HAVEN, CT (WFSB) -

Three juveniles were arrested in New Haven for two weekend robberies where a "zip gun" was used and a fourth juvenile was arrested for making the weapon.

The first robbery occurred in East Rock Park on English Drive and the second was in the area of State and Humphrey streets.

New Haven police took the juveniles into custody after similar suspect descriptions led officials to believe the same perpetrators had committed both crimes.

Upon being taken into custody, one of the suspects was in possession of a homemade zip gun.

Detectives secured a search warrant for the residence of another juvenile who allegedly manufactured the gun.

At that home, another assembled gun, a partially assembled gun and components intended for assembly were seized.

The unidentified juvenile was arrested and later told police that he had manufactured and sold as many as a dozen operational zip guns.

Not sure I'd call this thing a ''gun.''

Yes I know it's an old story. Still makes for good laughs though

True gunsmithing and household ingenuity. The craftsman should try for a magnum next time.

If it fires, it is a gun.

Sweet. You can upgrade the pipe to 3/4 inch and convert it to 12 gauge.

I am a fan of duct tape, don't think I would use it with things exploding in my face though.

Back in 65 I had two black youths try and rob me with a .22 cal zip gun. They were like 11 or 12. I had just walked out of my chemistry lab at USC. In those days, SC was in the middle of a black ghetto (Watts, if you remember the riots), so it wasn't unusual to see black kids cutting across campus as a short cut. As they walked up to me on the sidewalk, one of them grabbed me by the jacket, shoved the gun into my stomach, and demanded my wallet. Being young (I was 18) and stupid, I shoved the gun away with my left arm, told them to 'drop dead' and kept on walking. When I looked back 20 feet later, they were still standing there with their mouths open. When I got back to my dorm room, I started shaking in reaction. I owned a Colt Woodsman in those days, so I was familiar with .22s. Still can't believe I did that - I was a major nerd in those days.

Didn't have all the gaffers tape this one has, but it did have a rubber band hammer! Those of you too young to remember, they used to make zip guns out of a piece of wood, part of a radio antenna broken off of a car and fastened to the wood as a barrel, and a hammer with a nail in it that fired the .22. You pulled back the rubber-banded hammer and let it go to fire. Single shot, of course.
