    Can anyone ID this carbine?

This book looked intriguing. My first guess was a Mini 14, but it's hard to tell.

I am 99.9 percent positive that's an Armalite AR 18.

it's a little known fact they were also used in the "Troubles" for independence in Northern Ireland.

it was a high powered rifle with a folding stock which made it portable and more concealable than most others available at that time.

here's the link to what the rifle looks like from the side.

if you do Wikipedia search for weapons of the IRA you'll see more information that backs up my above statement.

        hope that helps you.
(and I also hope that link works.)

I was thinking ar180 or 18 also I'm well aware of their usage in the IRA. I like book authors name I remember the rapper Akinyele and his hit Put It In Your Mouth. I wonder if any connection?

Probably the semi-auto AR-180, I had one. Superior in many ways to the AR-15. Not the best execution of it's features (that came in the Daewoo).

Thanks to all for sharing. Interesting how little twists in history can make one rifle prevalent over another.

I don't know if it was a little twist. The AR-15 was officially adopted. Then several years later the AR-18 was developed as a cheaper alternative. The receiver is folded sheetmetal instead of forgings. My understanding is it never had much of a chance to displace the AR-15 because of politics.

Two of my favorite features on it are the gas piston system and the super simple and fast quick-detach scope mounting.
