    Bullet button ring tool.

I jus picked up my first ar15 yesterday and have been looking into a easier way to release the mag. I've seen a ring online that says that it's california compliant and figured I can make one pretty easy. My question is, is it legal to have one of these and to be on my thumb the whole time I'm shooting? I was telling a friend about it today while we were shooting and he told me that a guy at a local gun shop told him that was an instant felony. Any insight would be greatly appereciated as I am still new to the ar and bb community. Thanks

Forget the ring, buy these magazines with a tool built-in to release your magazine: http://www.thordsencustoms.com/shop/...-MAGAZINES.htm

I have 2 of their 10/20 Magpul magazines, works really well when I tried them out today. Will be ordering more.

You have come to the right place to understand the law. Just know about 1/2 the stuff said at gun stores is FUD!

        FUD:

Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt. Also known as scare tactics, either accomplished by threat or making the opponent doubt his standpoint. Not only used in lawsuits, but also in politics and by gun store employees.

Totally legal. And thank goodness you had the sense to ask, unlike the guy who told you what the random guy at the gun shop said.

The reason it's fine to use one of those rings, is because it's a tool and isn't attached to the rifle. Those magnet releases on the other hand(ie. mag magnet) are not legal because they're attached to the rifle via magnetism. Same reason you can't take a lanyard to a BB tool and attach that to your, but as long as you leave it unattached it's perfectly fine.

And like Synergy pointed out, never trust random people at the gun shop, especially gun shop employees(probably half the FUD still floating around in this state comes from gun shop employees).

Your OK Bro. The law states that you need tool remove your mag to be in compliance. That's what you have and that's what you doing. Using a tool to remove your mag.

Cool, thanks guys for the quick responses! I have looked into the mag with the bb release and will be ordering a couple but I think the ring is more practical for me at this time. I made one this morning with a push pin, Velcro, sewing needle and thred and a couple of dabs of super glue. It looks pretty good and is very comfortable on my thumb. So far it's holding up great.

Kedenimar. Those are the ones that I seen that say California compliant. They look good. Here's the one I made. Just drilled 4 small holes in the pin removed the metal and the top of the pin sewed it to the Velcro and put some superglue to cover all the thread so it doesn't fray. Think it would've looked better with a black push pin lol. I like it because it's adjustable for whoever wants to use it.
