Metcalf Range - No cheekresting an AR pistol allowed

went to Metcalf today and saw that someone with an AR pistol was cheek resting the buffer tube and was then told by RO's that he couldnt and was a felony.

I then proceeded to butt in and asked if that is the understanding of the law that people cannot do this move the law states this. Their answer was that it makes it a SBR and that local law enforcement (I assume either SJPD or Santa Clara County Sheriff) instructed them that cheek resting an AR pistol is illegal.

Just something to note that if you go to Metcalf with an AR pistol, you cannot shoulder or cheek rest an AR pistol. Regardless if it is the law or not, it appears they have taken the stance and made this a local range law regardless

Using a cheek weld on an AR pistol does not make it an SBR. Even the DOJ - not CA I know I know - has letters that can be found relative to a cheek weld on an AR pistol.

Shoulder firing it however is, IMHO and it has been debated elsewhere - even just recently, asking for trouble.

I see them as distinctly different... some don't.

I suppose if he had stuck the thing in his mouth it would have automatically transmuted legally and become a gastric lavage tube?
..and if he had held it a little further south the standard cap magazine would become a colostomy bag right?

Don't these damn cops have bigger fish to fry than worrying about lethal gun owners shooting their guns? Tell them to go catch child molesters, rapists, murderers, and solve all the crimes first before they can harass legal gun owners.

i am all for NOT shoulder firing an AR pistol, but i thought a RO telling him that cheek resting an AR pistol is a felony seemed off to me.

guess you can be on the safe side and not do any and shoot it like a pistol, but this just goes to show you how ridiculous things can get with laws.

on a side note, i saw his target at 50 yards without a cheek weld and resting it on a bag with a RDS and he was printing 1.5-2" groups. i thought that was cool

No law against gastric lavage tube usage, only SBR usage - and that seems to require a shoulder.

I think what he said is wrong and FUD, but classic gun range and gun shop BS. All of my AR pistol use cheek welds. I fire them that way all the time. But not at that range it would seem - but I don't use them anyway.

By this stupid logic, the guy in this vid should be arrested for making an illegal pistol out of a shotgun.

I've spoken with the senior ROs at Metcalf directly about this. Even took in the ATF's letter regarding the Sig and we discussed.

Legality is questionable, and the RO you dealt with probably shouldn't have asserted it as fact.

However, legality aside, this is a range policy. And if I remember correctly, its a restriction imposed on them as part of their edict from the County. Its the same reason we can't shoot silhouettes of humanoid zombie or animal figures, and can't even shoot solid dots that sit atop triangles.

                      Just FYI.

I'd say that *lethal* gun owners should be pretty high priority if anything...

i would tell them if they believe a felony is being commited they should call the police

the only analogy i can think of is you can hit a home run with a bat but if you carry it to first base and smack who is on first you now are in possession of a billyclub but that is due to case law

i tend to agree with you on this, but they made it a range policy. i just did not appreciate that the RO said it was a felony. he actually told/asked the guy..."would you shoulder/cheekrest a 500 S&W revolver?"

i was baffled hearing this and thought to myself, no use arguing here; their range, their rules i guess.
