I LOVE my DPMS .204 Ruger upper. It does AMAZING things to jackrabbit heads. And its a bit faster.

17 RFB is a right varmint killer. I have made a few, and sold many. It is quite posibly the only way to improve on the .204 for critter killing. The myths and opinions formed in years past abou the .17 centerfires are wrong. I have owned 2 17 Remingtons (a bolt action Sako, and a Noveske AR), and loved them. No fouling, no poor accuracy, etc... The RFB is a littel more efficient and less noisy. LOading... finding the right seating depth, powder charge, etc can be intensive- and you gotta weigh the powder charges.

          Don't shoot your eye out.

have you tryed this round out on deer or hogs? i know the bullet is smaller than a 222 or 223 but the casing is the same and MUCH faster, so with a hollow poinnt and a well placed shot it should fair well, am i wrong ?

With a hollow point it should break apart dramatically with little penetration. I'd hazard a guess that this is one of the reasons this caliber kills small animals so well.

Bullet weight is pretty important for deer and hogs. More weight = deeper penetration. .223 is a little light for deer, going with a smaller and lighter bullet with the same power behind it (even if it is moving faster) isn't going to make it any better.

i live in central texas and although i hate to admit it but about 80% of deer population are smaller bodied animals, i curently hunt with a 222 and my wife a 223. never had one to run more than about 5 yards ( knock on wood ).
and as far as the hogs go i could really care less if they run off and die. unfortunatly my place is COVERED in them.

You really think its better than the .204? I'm not an avid varmint hunter, but I've shot a few in my time. The .204 has higher velocity with higher weight bullets and isn't as flat shooting. Very little recoil to boot!

personally i would hate to say wich is better, from what i have been reading the 17 is faster than the 204 with some factory loads! much smaller lead and yes everything reads that 17 is a flatter shooting round
