After spending some time on the .338 I would say this is a better rifle for a sniper than the .50

Depends on how you look at it, the .50 is an awesome round!
No other small arms round can match its BC, most match rounds are at 1.0+. Even a ball round is .62.
When it comes to military rounds, none match its payload carrying capacity. Raufoss and SLAP can punch through light armor like butter and both are available on the civilian market.
Not sure what the best world records are for .338 LM but the .50 is sub 3" at 1000 yards! If you throw in the fact that its been around for almost 100 years and a military round, its cheap to shoot. Surplus is cheaper then the .338 and match rounds are about the same or less. If you reload the price goes down even more.50 BMG Shooters http://50-bmg.com/forum/index.phpComment

It would really depend on the distance. Both are not ideal until you get out to at least a reasonable distances like 1km. The .50BMG is a better anti-materiel round due to the magnitude of power. The .338LM is ballistically more efficient round and better as an anti-personnel cartridge. For long distance, neither hold a candle to the .375CT.Comment

The bottom line is that you can't use either for sniping in CA. Ca law states that only shotguns can be used to take snipe here.NRA Certified Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun and Metallic Cartridge Reloading Instructor

You cannot fire SLAP rounds through anything but an M2 the plastic will destroy the rifling.Depends on how you look at it, the .50 is an awesome round!

2nd the SASR and it's counterparts are not even sniper rifles. They are 3 MOA guns, in order to be a sniper rifle you need to be 1 moa or less. At least for the Marine Corps which has arguably the best sniper program. There are bolt action .50 cal weapons that shoot 1 moa though.
The m-200 is the premier large caliber sniper rifle. .50 is a poor sniper round bullet manufactures don't make as many good .50 bullets because it's more practical to shoot smaller rounds that kill just as well with WAY less weight.Comment

The SLAP round (singular) will do exciting things to your muzzle brake. The rifling doesn't enter into it.You cannot fire SLAP rounds through anything but an M2 the plastic will destroy the rifling.

That's why smart people would remove the brake when using SLAP ammo. What you need is enough room in the chamber to shoot SLAP rounds, my AR-50 will chamber them just fine.50 BMG Shooters http://50-bmg.com/forum/index.phpComment

If you want a .50 in BMG you'll have to buy an M2 to have it here in CA. The next best option is the .50 DTC, it uses all the same components as 50 BMG.
Why get stuck with .416 Barrett?50 BMG Shooters http://50-bmg.com/forum/index.phpComment
