Am vacationing in California in 2 days

I have a Concealed Carry permit in Texas and we are driving to California to vacation. I have decided to carry my M&P shield with me but I intend to lock it in a case before entering CA and not access it there.

I have checked the law and it appears that while travelling through the state, that is adequate. But the argument was made to me that I am not travelling through the state, but am setting up residence there for the 7 days I am on vacation.

Is there anything I need to know?

I want to have the handgun specifically for all the illegal activity happening on the border now. If my car breaks down, My whole family would be in danger if something gang/drug related happened around me.

    Thanks for a speedy reply.

Your carry permit is not recognized by California state law. Transport it unloaded in a locked case.

Feel free to have it loaded and unlocked in your dwelling.

Transport unloaded in a locked case. You may keep it unlocked and loaded in your "Domicile" IE hotel room, friends house (if he allows) ext.

And, no mags 11 rounds or greater.

        Enjoy your trip.

Handgun must me transported in a locked case, unloaded, at all times. You can carry a loaded mag in the case with the gun, but NOT IN the gun.

That is just about the best possibility you'll have if anything goes haywired. Just gotta make sure youre fast at unlocking the lock, stupid... I know.

The glove compartment isnt considered a locked container, fyi. The only compartment in the car that is considered a locked container is the trunk of the car, that isnt accessible from another location without a lock.

Where are you staying, might i ask?

            Vacation in CA

We are staying 6 nights in LA area (Anaheim) and 1 night in San Diego.

Are looking forward to everything except the traffic.

And thanks to all for the replys. That is what I thought but I did learn that I could keep the weapon loaded in my room.

If I could add one thing please. I am keeping the gun in a padlocked case in the back of the car. I drive a pilot which does not have a locking trunk. I must lift the back door to access the trunk but the trunk itself does not lock.

                Want to be specific.

... and inside your campsite, if you plan on doing any camping, except possibly CA State Parks (grey area?). Check this thread for more info. on carrying Firearms in Forests and Parks

A-OK. Shouldn't be a problem as you describe it.

You'd already satisfy the locked case requirement by having the pad locked case, so technically you would just leave on the floor in the back seat and be fine.

I only brought up the locked trunk just in case you didnt have a locked case and or just wanted to through the handgun in the trunk for some odd reason!

Let me guess, youre going to disneyland? Or maybe even six flags...

Shouldve done more than one night in San Diego! If you were a beer guy, we have hundreds of micro breweries here.

As for traffic, it's standard rules, avoid rush hour 3-6.

                        +1

San Diego brewing scene > Disneyland.

Unless of course you have kids, then you'll have to pay homage to The Mouse.

Yep. We have the Mouse for 2 days plus as many attractions on the LA Card as we can squeeze in while we are there. Some we are not interested in. One is the tolerance museum and I can guess that this attraction was built specifically for me. But several nice museums, a whale watching tour, etc.

this is off the gun track here but should we drive or take mass transit?

Knotts Berry farm is across the street from Disneyland. There is a good place to have lunch right on the outside of the park gate for fried chicken. Also, don't fuel your car near the themeparks. They have the highest gas prices in the universe around there.

Ariel's Grotto (or Cove Bar I think they're calling it now) in California Adventure serves stiff hard alcoholic drinks. There's a server there that'll do you right if you tip them before you order as well... in case you need to give your brain a timeout from the waits and crowds.

San Diego beer sucks though if you don't like IPA's, but I'm no expert on beer since beer is usually what I drink when I'm done drinking.
