    Gun show purchases

Hey all, yet another question. Soon I will be all out of them and a happy young man that only has to worry about eating, sleeping, studying, and poking holes in paper.
    I digress:
If I were to purchase a rifle or handgun at a gun show from a seller (say Cold War Shooters since I like them and have spent a lot of money in the past with them). Would they ship me my rifle/handgun after my 10 days is up? Or would I have to drive to a location to pick the item up myself?

    Thanks in advance.

If Cold War Shooters were to handle the FFL transaction, then you would have to go to them to pick up the firearm. Typically, there is another FFL that at gun shows that is more local to the location of the gun show (meaning a SD FFL at the Del Mar gunshow).

So in essence I would have to drive all the way up to their CA location?
What if it was an out of state seller at the show?
Seems kind of weird that they cannot just mail it to me if I submit all my information in person at the show and pass the background and DROS procedures.
Couldn't I just say that I need a part replaced and installed by them to make it qualify as a repair item?

The main reason I ask is because I love supporting Precision Arms since they are pretty much the only OLL friendly FFL in San Diego in terms of doing transfers, but the fees come out to almost the cost of the lower itself.

I might be wrong but (for a fee) they can send it to an FFL near you for pick up. but bottom line is when you take position it has to be from an FFL ...

Isn't that just a standard FFL transfer though? That is what I am trying to avoid since it is like 60 plus the DROS and such for a total of roughly 90 dollars for a 100ish dollar lower.

They can't mail the firearm to you. Otherwise, we'd just buy firearms straight off of gunbroker and say 'screw you' to a lot of the brick-and-mortars.

Yeah, it's just a normal FFL transfer.

The way gun show firearms purchases work in CA is the following:

                  1. You select and pay for (purchase) the firearm that you want to have.
                  2. Gun show dealer will have a default local transfer FFL handy or you may use an alternative one of your choosing that is also in attendence of the show.
                  3. The Gun Show dealer will complete the CFLC procedures via available computer at their booth or show and then transport your purchase to the the FFL you wish to use to transfer the firearm.
                  4. The transfer FFL will receive the firearm and have you complete the DROS with them and have you pay the DROS fee plus their transfer fee.
                  5. After ten 24-hour periods have elapsed after you've started your DROS, you may pickup your firearm from the transfer FFL.

Yes, it would be handled just like a standard FFL transfer. It's the only way you can legally buy firearms at CA gun shows.

If you want to save on the transfer fee + DROS, then buy from a local shop that carries what you need. It is the only way to "avoid" paying the transfer fee on top of the DROS fee short of traveling to their location to pick it up after ten 24 hour periods have elapsed.

Also please keep in mind, not all gun show vendors have a brick and mortar storefront. I've met many vendors from in and mostly out of state that don't have a physical store location you can visit. In the end if you buy a firearm from them you'll still have to pay the DROS + transfer fee to your transfer FFL.

I just cannot see how it would be any different picking up and having it mailed to you if you go there in person to start the DROS and submit all your personal information.

So ultimately it would just save the shipping cost to do it that route then?
I know at the Del Mar gunshow there are zero (from what I have seen) OLL friendly FFLs present to do said transfer. Oh well, time to sack up and spend the 90ish on fees for a 100 dollar lower.
                    Thanks for the help all.

It's a firearm and it isn't technically yours until you finish the DROS + ten 24 hour period wait and physically pick up the firearm in person where the FFL can double check your CA ID or CDL to make sure you're the person who bought the firearm originally when the DROS process was started. That's the law and there's no other way around it.

So in short, buying in person only saves you the shipping fees. However, it doesn't get you around paying use/sales tax on the firearm and the FFL trasfer fee.

Additionally, if I'm not mistaken there is at least one OLL friendly shop in San Diego, no? Where's The Chief when you need him?

I was thinking the same thing. (where's Chief) Check out the stickies there is a list of FFL holders all over the state. I saw 1 in S.D. and 2 in the 619 area code.

I'd guess that's why they're so friendly. You can find a ffl who's both friendly and reasonable on the transfer price...you just need to look.

I have burned my phone up calling around. The cheapest I found was 55 at Police Supply in Vista, Precision charges 60 plus DROS in Escondido, and the rest are around 55-60 but farther way, or all the way up at 100+ for places like the Shooting Center and Turners. I mean I am all for supporting these local places, but for a college student spending 85 dollars on fees alone on top of a 100 dollar lower is a stinger.
Oh well, time to bite the bullet and buy another one or two before the elections.
