    Otis cleaning kits w/bulk patches?

I was considering buying one of those bulk cleaning patches packs to clean a 9mm barrel. Any recommendations? EDIT: like one of those cheap square patches that you can get 500 for $10. $10/100 for the Otis ones seems a little steep. Not that steep, but still...

I use the Otis stuff. It might get better & it might get cheaper, everything works just fine. First time I used the kit, Cleaned my mini 14 (I thought was clean) several dirty patches. Much better than the old rod banging.

Those things are for suckers, its like buying pre-cut toilet papers and paying a premium for it.

Go buy yourself a pack of Painter's Rag, they sell them by the pound in big box stores like Home Depot and Lowes. Cut them into strips, wrap around your bore brush and ram it through your barrel.

i havent bought patches in 5 or 6 years, i just cut up any white undershirts and wifebeaters when they get too old, any white shirt really but the thinner undershirts work best.

i occasionally pick up varying quantities of patches at the swap meet for $1.00, or less. mostly, i use whatever old rags i have at home that meet my criteria; cutting them down to size is not a major production.

I use bulk square patches with my Otis cleaning kit and they work just fine. The round Otis patches were too expensive. I've used Hoppe's, Tipton and some generic brand I found at a gun show.

I use bulk patches with my Otis setup. Agree that the Otis patches are $$$$ and unnecessary.

I use to cut up old shirts and sheets and make them the same size as the Otis patches, but I ran out of those and also got lazy.

Then I went to the cheap square ones that cost 9 dollars for 500 available at any gun store.

Recently though I bought a 1000 pack of Otis Patches online for 40 bucks free shipping so it came out to buy 4 get 6 free or about 2.5 cents per patch vs the 100 for 10 dollars which comes out to 10 cents per patch.

Figure this is going to last me awhile and it doesn't take up too much closet space.

Good info, all. I'm going to try both options (bulk patches & old to-shirts, etc). Thank you.

                        FYI for the ether....

Orchard Supply Hardware sells bags of pre-cut t-shirts as well as painters rags.
