The thread on supporting your local gunshop (http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...t=34654&page=2) made me think about what I have been doing with my time and money.
As many of you know, before the OLL craze I had just finished consolidating calibers (5.56, 7.62 x 51, and 30-06) to maximize my buying power. I sold quite a few rifles to meet this goal, but I do not handload and wanted to stack up on ammo. I live in the SF Bay Area and the few shops that are left (R.I.P SF Gun Exchange, CA Arms and Ammo, Siegels...sigh) are endangered species. I know this sounds obvious, but stock up on ammo for a rainy day. Do not wait. Do it as soon as you can.
Purchase replacement parts.
Purchase rifles that have replacement parts readily available at a reasonable price (M1A parts are pricey, no way around it unless you buy used SAI). A good example would be the M1 Garand. You can buy a complete bolt for a very reasonable amount and can have it head spaced by your armorer for a small amount.
Purchase two of the same rifle?
Yes, if you can afford it buy two M1A's or two M1 Garands. You can share magazines and buy parts that both rifles can share.
Purchase a quality rifle sling.
I purchased quality rifle slings for all my rifles. It was expensive, especially for new leather slings for my battlerifles, but well worth it. You never know what will happen in the future and a quality sling is a worthwhile investment.
This is how I have been spending my gun money lately, I hope some new guys find it useful.
