back from lytle creek

had my first visit to lytle creek today. i made it out there about 9:30ish and it was about 80% full. i took my new(to me) mosin out there for it's first paces unfortunately i discovered it has a bit of sticky bolt syndrome (which will be cleaned promptly). unfortunately i only had 20 rounds to put through it but i did make the 100 yard gong spin on my 19th shot let some guy next to me shoot it a couple times and he let me shoot his ak, so all and all it was a great time.

Very good, some time tag along with a member of the WEGC range 10 miles closer and 10 bucks to shoot all the .18c surplus ammo you want with that mosin.I used to go to lytle creek before i discovered WEGC. never been back

You must bot have been to WEGC recently either. WEGC no longer allows "walk in's" by the general public and has not for several years. WEGC requires that you be a "Limited" or "Fulll" member to shoot at the club. Limited members have use of the front main, supervised rifle/pistol firing line on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays only. Limited members MAY NOT use any of the back shooting bays or facilities. Beginning JAN 1 2015 all new and renewing Limited members will be required to prove and maintain NRA membership.

After the last monthly board of directors meeting I believe that the WEGC "Full membership" is almost back up to its capacity or it will be after this next month, and a waiting list will be started for 2015 membership applications.

I haven't been to any other ranges since I became a full member of WEGC.....................wait, I did go shoot skeet at Prado one time. Our shotgun range is closed right now. For rifle or pistol shooting, I don't have a desire to go anywhere but West End. Yes, you can be a guest of a limited or full member if they would like. Limited members can have two guests and full members can have three guests. I take guests with me once in a while.

Great info! Competitions can be open to the public, but to shoot on your own you have to be a member or a guest of a member, and then always in the presence of the member. It is well worth becoming a member. The limited member's range is very nice and the RO's are great. The full membership is where it is at. It is the best of BLM land and public shooting range rolled into one. The competitions are very fun, safe, yet laid back. Ronin2 and I both participate in the competitions. He is very active in helping out the club and trying to make it a better place for the members. Thank you for your hard work Ronin2.

Notabiker obviously meant for him to find a buddy who is a member to allow him to come shoot at the range, for a great experience. He mentioned "tag along with a member of WEGC." Unless I misunderstood the rules of the club, this would be allowed. This is a great way to see what the club has to offer. There is a C&R shoot (open to any gun though) on the limited members range every month. I have a few C&Rs and other older firearms.

I also cast my own boolits and reload my own ammo. West End seems to draw the people who are serious about furthering their skills as shooters. Lytle creek was a decent range, but it can draw people who may not be so serious about safety and the sport of shooting in general (ex. gang bangers, or novices who would benefit from a mentor or buddy who can show them the ropes). The individual berms at WEGC also provide some separation between shooters for when you don't want to worry about what others are doing, or you want to make up your own course of fire where you can move about on the range. It is a great environment for testing different loads, guns, or shooting techniques.

I always end up next to the gang bangers......

After popping plastic water bottles at 25yds without missing with my little 22/45... they NEVER LOOK in my direction again, and pretend I dont exist....

Few yrs ago when I went there regularly, most of the RO's were really cool unless you're an idiot and NEED to be yelled at.

been a while though since I'm a full member of WEGC. (and WEGC RO's often times are wearing sidearms ja308...)

I don't do Lytle Crek anymore because ofthe issues they have with allowing legally owned over 10 round magazines.

All the bangers out there.... You NEVER let all your guns go empty just in case.....

As a controlled range, it's fine. As a public shooting area it was scary....

Do you need to bring targets and stands to Lytle Creek, or do they have them there?

I have only used the 100 yrd range so far there, not sure on the longer range.
Bring your own in general though.
They have paper targets mounted on cardboard/ wooden stakes for sale but bring a hefty hammer to pound them in the hard ground out there unless you want to look like a caveman using rocks to pound (been there done that). I think they have a hammer lying around to borrow sometimes.
If you have your own standard type target stand base, the ones they sell should fit in there (what I do)
They had a couple metal dingers (one or two) out there at 100 yards last time I went there, but was weeks ago.
Bring your bowling pins, standing targets, spinners, clay targets and have fun.
