Seeking Help: Someone own Mossberg 500 in Bay area

    Hi guys,

So I bought a new Mossy 500 last week. I had read a few places that new guns have crud and excessive oil in them for storage, and should be cleaned before usage. So looking at Youtube, I took it apart and put it back (the best I could) I am not able to rack the pump, or pull the trigger. It's obvious that I didn't put it back together correctly. Yes, I have tried to re-do the entire process several times. I've gotten so good at it I can take it apart and put it together in 2-3 minutes (yeah, but all wrong...)

I've finally given up and if anyone who owns a mossy 500, or knows how to put it back together can help me I'll truly appreciate it. I'm in Hayward can meet at Milpitas range, San Leandro range, or any other gun place like a Big 5.

    Thanks in advance!

man that must be frustrating. I would just take it to a local gunsmith. What a P.I.T.A. I've taken Remingtons all the way down but not a the Mossbergs.

Did you hook the action arms into the correct spot on the bolt slide?

I have a 590A1, and I have disassembled/reassembled it numerous times through the years. The 500 should be very similar.

Below is a very nice video for reassembling the shotgun -- watch and listen carefully as this guy showed some very clear instructions. If you follow the video step-by-step (assume no parts of your shotgun are broken), you should have no problem putting it together perfectly.

          Best luck,

i own a few 500's and a 590. mossbergs are great but they can be harder to put back together. it sounds like the action bars are not in the right spot. also i will bet the shell stop and interrupter are jammed in wrong. did you force the gun back together? mossbergs are like a puzzle, once everything lines up is is silky smooth. where in Hayward do you live? if you are close to bart or public transportation i can give it a look.

also is the safety on and action release sticking out? if so then just take the safety off and dryfire it.

Hey .40Cal, I feel your pain. I just did exactly the same thing this week, picked up the 500 Sunday and tore it down to clean up the gunk Tuesday night. I had some struggles as well and I would agree that the issue is most likely in the action arms not being properly set with the bolt.

I followed this vid and it helped quite a bit. The most frustrating part for me was getting everything to sit still while getting the trigger assembly in place.

Hope this helps...and congrats on the Mossy, still haven't shot mine but heading to the range soon.

I didn't open the trigger assembly...just down to all the basics shown in the following video.

You're right my friend. I read that before also, but didn't know what the heck was it. Looking at the video, it nailed my problem right at 2:03-2:05. In those 2 seconds, I got it. I had just put together everything without arms in the notch.

                Thanks everyone...

Next problem (not really a problem though) ... is that the pumping action seems not so smooth as I'd like to be. When it was opened up, I noticed that there are a lot of machining marks, burs, not very smooth surfaces or notches. I feel that polishing a few of these would make the action smooth. Only problem is, I don't know what to polish. Don't wanna smooth out something that has negative affects. However, I am sure that the notches in the pump arm need to be smoothed out a little. Any info on this? Sorrrrrrrry, asking for too much, I know. Thanks!

If you're in SF sooner than someone can help you in the East Bay, lemme know. I've owned Mossberg shotguns since the 70's.

So long as you didn't FORCE it back together, it should be fine.

Thanks you friend... I'm all good.

Thanks everyone. The video really helped. Like I said, I was only missing the notch in the bolt carrier and pump bar. Anyhow, I also smoothed out some of the rough edges, applied a little Petrol-Gel Lubricant (thick clear-white grease/lube used in machinery - high temp & food products safe). After this it is running very, very smooth. I'll get a polishing pad/high grade sanding paper to finish this. But I've taken it apart and successfully put it back a few times now. Working Woderfully. I can actually help someone do the same on their Mossy 500. This is how education flows... Can't thank you guys enough...

The mag tube is, however, is gonna get all scratched up with all the pumping action the way it's designed. I gotta live with that. Unless there's a remedy someone knows.

if its new fire it and a couple hundred times. it will smooth the action out and you will have fun. then if the action is still not as smooth as you want take it to a gunsmith.

Definitely get smoother with use.Kind of a win-win deal. You get to have fun and your equipment gets better.

10-22s and 870s are like that too.Sometimes used ones are almost better.
