Moving to CA

I am about to move to the SF Bay area from VA and have been doing a ton of reading on this site about CA gun laws. This site has been a great resource in helping sift through the ton of info that is out there.

From what I have read, I think I have a good grasp on things. If I want to bring an AR, it needs to be an OLL and have fixed 10 rd mag and all the "evil" SB23 features I want or a removable 10 rd mag and no "evil" features.

It looks like I can bring in whatever pistols I want, "safe" list or not, but have to pay the extortion fee tax to register them.

Coming from an anything goes state, I was wondering if anyone had any advice on things that would be good to buy before moving that I cannot get in CA, but can import and/or posses in CA?

The other (noob) question I had was about openly carrying a pistol. I am having a hard time figuring out if you can open carry a pistol when out hiking or camping someplace far beyond the reach of cell phones. Where I grew up, we would always take at least a .22 with us when we went out into the wilds as you never knew what might come across you. Is this legal in CA?

You opened a can o'worms, yep you did. By tomorrow this should be at least 5 pages long with a "want" list form everybody on here.
+1 on the HK's, some(read that any) old S&W revolvers, Dan Weson.......etc....

Like I said to the other guy. Take out a loan and buy about 10-20 1911/2011 bare frames. Throw some AR15 pistol receivers in there as well.

Mark them up 20%-30% and PPT them to folks here once you get into the state. You'll make a mint. Might even defray some of your moving costs

I would buy a frame and an AR pistol receiver, easily, even at the markup.

As a friend . . . Move to a free state. You will be hit by high cost of living, taxes up the ying yang, liberal, and a bunch of laws that don't make sense. As Monty Python would say "Run Away, Run Away!"

Buy all you can and when you get here sell them to your brother in arms. I would like to buy a Kimber Desert Warrior one day.

Is there a legal difference between an AR pistol lower and a rifle lower? I have done a little searching and found some manufacturers stamp "pistol" on their lowers, as with Spike Tactical. Can an AR pistol be built on a lower if it is not stamped pistol?
