    Shooting a suppressed rifle

I was in New Zealand last week and was loaned a Tikka chambered in 222 Remington that was fitted with a screw on suppressor. The gun had it's barrel bobbed to just under 20" and threaded for the suppressor.

Unfortunately I didn't get the brand name of the suppressor but the outside of the body was actually made of plastic, with aluminum baffles and a light steel liner. The body of the suppressor was about 8"- 9" long and just about 2" in diameter. It did not feel muzzle heavy at all, I'm betting that the suppressor weighed between 16 and maybe 20 ounces. The internal threads that screw on the barrel are a few inches inside the tube so it only added about 5-6" to the length of the barrel.

A similar silencer mounted on a 300 Win Mag was twice as long and did seem more cumbersome.

As far as how it worked on the 222, after the first shot I was in love with it. Felt recoil from the 222 cartridge was probably less than a 22 LR in my 10/22 and the sound reduction was similarly impressive. It was easily half the volume of a 22 rimfire and I wouldn't hesitate to shoot it all day without hearing protection.

I've never wanted any kind of NFA weapon before but I would pay $1,000 to have a suppressor like this for my varmint guns.

I've shot several suppressed rifles and silencers are by far the most attractive NFA item for me. I'd pay what ever extortion tax CA would slap on them if they would only let us have them.

              Does it come in left-handed?

                  Plastic body??

No thanks seen to many of those fail or break when dropped, PLUS $1000 for a plastic bodied/aluminum baffled suppressor is way over priced

I was never interested in suppressors until I finally shot one. I'm still not a big fan of them other than .22lr cans. I love those. It's so nice being able to coach my 8 year old while he is practicing on his full auto .22. I also start of new shooters with a suppressed M&P22. It takes out so much of the initial scare of a tool that makes a loud noise.

Not often do I lust for another mans experiences but you have a nack of bringing the worst out in me. Congratulations on a great trip and experience.

We have a complete government department devoted to not allowing things that make to much noise being sold. Many production items have to be changed so the noise level meets government standards.

Yet we continue to damage the hearing of any one in the Military or sport shooters because we fail to allow supressors. Makes one wonder.

I have only shot one in my life and it belonged to a Federal trapper. Very quiet recoil was non existent and a coyote was taken outside an office building and not a single person heard a thing

Being 66 and living vicariously through an imaginary friend could qualify me in the governments eyes as unstable and they will take my guns from me.
