    PPT vs LGS - pros/cons

    Hi all,

In the market for a new handgun and wanted to asked some opinions.

Have done both in the past but...

What would be your pros/cons behind completing a ppt or/versus a purchase from a lgs?

Aside from off roster (which is an obvious ppt pro) - assuming both handguns are available for purchase as handgun is on roster and in equal condition (or very near equal)...

Would you support the local gun store or save a couple bucks and go ppt?

Just as an fyi - I am leaning lgs - other opinions?

    Thanks in advance.

If it were a close dollar amount between a new and used gun I'll always go new. Supports the LGS and I'd rather have a new gun(in most cases).

If a used gun is a good enough price though and I can save a decent amount of money or get a gun that maybe isn't made anymore there's no other way to go than a PPT or buying a consignment, which gives the LGS a little more profit.

If OTD is close, may get new. However, I like lightly used pre-owned because savings are 8-9% on tax minimum if priced like new and previous owner has started the break-in process saving another couple hundred bucks on ammo! =)

        Hi all,

Yeah - that is what has me debating...

Slightly used is a great price plus break-in time is complete (ammo savings), but supporting lgs and helping to keep pro 2A strong against the CA anti-gun crowd is a plus too...

Now here is a new question...

My family member has the off roster version of the handgun (XDm) and is happy to gift it to me, but locally I can get an XD either through lgs or ppt.

Would you be inclined to go XDm over XD? I would have to block the XDm mags or get blocked to use in CA, but I haven't tried the XDm... Am a fan of the XD, btw.

I have an XD40 and have shot a friends XDm40 and XDm9. IMO they do shoot better, I like the adjustable back straps. If the price wasn't much more I'd buy one but it's not good enough for me to run out and SSE one and replace my XD40.

It depends on certain variables like the LGS, firearm, seller, etc. Some firearms are expensive and you can save a lot by not paying tax via PPT. I would definitely support an honest LGS, but I also wouldn't mind supporting an honest seller either. Either option helps the economy.

I buy used if it saves me money, if its close in price OTD, I buy new, how close? Depends on each gun.

The XD's I have seen are running in the $450-$550 range for PPT - new I can pick up an XD in the $515-$575 range (not including tax).

For the XDm I wouldn't need to use SSE for intrafamilial PPT - correct? And since it is a gift, I avoid all cost and tax - just the PPT and paperwork cost - but I have not shot the XDm, and not sure how I feel about a gift of a $500 gun from my fam...

Pro for LGS: Warranty on new gun. Most warranties (even the "lifetime" ones) are valid for only the original owner.

Cons for LGS: more expensive, taxes, and transfer fees (if you bought online)

Pro for PPT: usually cheaper and occasionally has extra stuff thrown in (mags, holster, etc.)

Cons for PPT: May be inheriting someone else's headaches.
