    Selling out of state

Dumb question, but I've tried half dozen searches and looked at the DoJ site. The answer is not jumping out at me. I am familiar with the restrictions on purchasing a handgun out of state as a CA resident. Are there restrictions on selling guns to residents of other states?

Needs to be shipped to an FFL. The receiving dealer might not accept guns from individuals. In that case, you'll need to find a CA dealer that will take the gun in and ship it out for you. There is usually a charge for this.

If there is no problem with the receiving dealer accepting a gun from an individual, it needs to be shipped overnight via UPS or Fed Ex. This is a pretty penny. UPS has a product called the "Next Day Air Saver". Instead of the regular Next Day service which is delivered by 10am local time, it's delivered by 3pm local time and saves a bit of money.

According to federal law there is no need to notify the shipper that the package contains a firearm if the recipient is an FFL(I have an ATF letter that says the ATF FAQs are wrong if you want me to post it.) UPS or FedEx might not honor the insurance for the item if it's lost or stolen if you don't declare it a firearm. Your choice.

If you choose to ship, print off the policy from the company website and bring it in. Sometimes they need to be educated about their own policies.

Thanks for the info. I recently shipped an XD-40 to my brother-in-law in Willits, through an FFL in Temecula, but the FFL in Willits still sent me some paperwork to sign, which made no sense to me since it was sent to him by an FFL. The system in CA is quite quirky, but I am familiar with the FedEx deal, since I sent my service match pistol to Novak Sights last year for a bunch of work. I picked it up there in WV and brought it back to CA, it's my pistol so there wasn't an x-fer required, but I had to pay state tax. My concern was that since CA has restrictions on importing "unsafe" guns, it might work in the reverse, this is a hi-cap Colt Combat Commander, a custom job that was done by Terry Tussy back in the mid-80s. Colt Series 80 slide, Para Ord P14 frame. I listed it under private sales but there wasn't any interest. Too bad too because Tussy did $800.00 in work in 1985 dollars and I was only asking 650 + the $65.00 for FFL shipping. I suppose, like myself, most folks want a platform they can work with, and while I can modify this Para frame, I can't convert it to single-stack in CA, can't import a Caspian frame. Or I wouldn't be selling it, it's a beatutiful piece. See for yourself. So my objective now is to see if any friends or relatives out of state are interested before I put it on consignment and let a dealer charge some guy $850, out of which I get what I'm asking for in the first place. Nothing against FFLs, or the local shop - but I'd rather see someone get it for the lower asking price before I resort to that.

Forgot the pic. This is not an offer, that's already made under private sales. Just FYI as to why I'm asking this dumb question to begin with.
