$50 PPT fee legal? Updated with conclusion

Update on page 3 post 92

I did a PPT today and when I was getting ready to pay the guy at the store said my total was $75. I asked what the $50 fee was and he said it was a storage fee on top of the background check. I wasn't paying $75 and talked him down to $50. I would have gone to another store but every other store in town was closing, I was doing the transfer out of town and didn't want to put a burden of meeting up aging on the guy selling me the gun over $15.

From what I understand about PPT it's $25 for the background check and a maximum of $10 for the dealer fee. What was fishy about the storage fee was that after asking for a lower price he quickly knocked $25 off the storage fee so my new storage fee should be $25, $25 for the background check and a $10 dealer fee. I was charged $50 in the end. I know $25 went towards the background check, did the remaining $25 go towards a storage fee, or $10 for the dealer fee and $15 for the storage fee? I got a receipt that only has "$50 PPT" listed on it.

If this is illegal who do I report the dealer to.

Yep, he can't charge more than $35 total.

$25 DROS fee and $10 PPT fee is all they can charge for that part... there is nothing that prevents a shop from adding other "ancillary" fees, except for you using your feet to find another shop that doesn't add on those extras.

I've encountered some places that slap on a "shop fee" of between $50-100 bucks on top of what the CA laws say they can legally charge for the actual transfer paperwork.

But that was not usually a true PPT where the seller and buyer are present. It's not unusual for a shop to charge a storage or shop fee if a gun is purchased elsewhere and shipped to them for transfer to a buyer.

I understand to part where he charged a "storage fee" but its his shop. Yes I do think because the receipt said "ppt $50.00" he could be in trouble with big brother. But he probably uses the "PPT BUTTON" on his register for convenience. Now if he did have "another button" for Shop Fee we would not be having this conversation.

          Report it to us.

Name and shame and he'll get a nice drop in his biz and maybe some calls to set him straight.

So you want to "name and shame" a ffl because he charges a "storage fee" in his own business? Do you own a Business? Do you pay for overhead? If the OP didn't like it he should have left and did the PPT somewhere else. But you want to "set him straight"? Are you going to make the calls yourself?

Its a free market. Ever heard of yelp?

Buyer beware so let the buyer be aware. If its a shop I have been to I will def call and ask what is up.

And yes, I hate gougers and ffl's that take advantage of retarded state laws.

              Name and shame I say.

Its shady as hell charging extra fees for a FTF PTT. FFLs can make up all they want with mailed transfers. I think its why most are pretty expensive in California.

Should be $35, anything else is extra fees, which happen to be legal. My range charges a $10 admin fee on top of DROS. I don't mind it at my range though, because I can shoot my purchase there while I wait the 10 days.

First off Yelp is a joke. Second if he is offering a service should that person do it for free? (not saying I would have paid it happily or at all for that matter BUT) Do you know much a FFL makes off a ppt? Im with you on the "Buyer beware so let the buyer be aware" to a point. But to smash ones business with a MOB because he charges a storage fee is kinda ridiculous. Sure let it be know but come on really

The DOJ has stated that no other fees can be charged for a PPT.

Well I'm sorry, but my patience is wearing thin these days.

                        So...what gun shop?

yup, when said FFL breaks the law by charging an illegal fee, by all means, name and shame him (after you've confirmed that he knows that he was wrong and is unwilling to make it right). The FFL knew (or should have known) that doing PPTs for $35 total ($25 DROS + $10 dealer) is one of the terms of having a dealer license in CA. And a smart FFL would try to make the best light of having 3 forced visits through his doors, one person with "new" money burning a hole in his pocket, and being paid for their appearance. do you know how much advertising it can cost to get people through the door, and he's being fed these potential customers for free.

And no, he shouldn't have to leave and go somewhere else. Thats what the FFL wants him to do. if the FFL gets you to go to the guy down the street, he's pawning off his responsibility on others.

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

we shouldn't even have to do a PPT, I'm already getting raped for $35 just to buy that gun, why should the FFL get to rip me off for more just because he doesn't think he is making enough on a state-forced transaction?
