Trying to figure out if there is a headset that doesn't interfere with looking down sights while shooting a rifle. I'm not overly fond of ear plugs, so I'm trying to find something slim that does the job that is hopefully a headset. Or am I screwed to use ear plugs?

I use the Leight Electronics (http://www.amazon.com/Howard-Leight-...ronic+earmuffs) and don't really run into any issues that can't be easily overcome. They are pretty low profile in comparison to others I ownGreater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends -
Get some custom earplugs or try some Surefire EP3/EP5s.Comment

Yea, the loud rifles I shoot outside. I shoot a ruger 10/22 indoors, but ya know, that thing is quiet and not really a problem.WTS HK USP45c http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s....php?t=1304283Comment

OP, these: http://www.lapolicegear.com/peltor-9...FZRcfgodBIkAsQ are the best 'bang' for your buck regarding electronic earpros. They compress loud noises rather than completely cutting sound out altogether. If you're trying to have a conversation or need to hear commands from the range official then you're going to be let down by the cheaper electronic earpros like the Impact's that everyone buys. Yeah, the Impact's will work, they're half the cost and they're better than nothing but if you have the cash to spend then definitely go with the Peltors.Last edited by anti; 06-03-2014, 4:11 PM.Truckers make the world go 'round!

I love my Peltors. I've gone through a few sets of them in the last 6 years or so, since I shoot in the rain fairly often. But that's the only issue I've ever had. If you're in a torrential downpour, they may wind up getting crackly speakers. The pairs I have that didn't get completely drenched have worked fine for several years now.Comment

I had the same problem and couldn';t find anything that worked, i also hated the feeling ear plugs gave me. I found some swimers wax that you mold into your ear kind of like this. They can be used about 3 times or so by a single person. It works wonders when shooting everything from 22lr to 338lp, when and if you shoot 50 BMG you'll need more (found out the hard way).
As for indoor shooting, i use muffs.Last edited by morfeeis; 06-03-2014, 5:11 PM.ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ

If you will be shooting the big caliber rifle rounds or indoors then you may still need to double up. I double up except on trap range, someone always ends up shooting a cannon somewhere on the line and hearing is important!
Also make sure your ear plug are in correct! Many don't use them right: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPNPZJingZAComment

I always wear plugs under ear muffs.
The low profile long gun muffs have a Db reduction rating of 20-23
Plugs are 28-33
Your hearing is too valuableRule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED
Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)
Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET
Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT

+1 on this. I had the same issue as you OP and the Peltors work great. As mentioned I do put soft plugs in to double up when shooting indoors. This: http://www.amazon.com/3M-Peltor-Shot.../dp/B0002INNUO

would definitely double up, especially indoors
I like Surefires + "shotgunner" muffs for times when I need a slimmer profile
Surefires + electronic muffs for all shooting when I can
actual plugs + muffs for really loud"You will never know how much it has cost my generation to preserve your freedom. I hope you will make good use of it."

I have a pair of these. Maybe theyre the wrong size or something because they tend to work their way out of my ear slowly. And even when fully inserted they are insufficient at indoor ranges. I leave with some mild ringing so ive stopped using them. But they are extremely comfortable...
