    Shooting a mannequin

My colleagues and I are planning to bring a mannequin to a private range for our next team shoot. When I checked out videos of similar shoots, it seems that mannequins can soak up a lot of 5.56mm rounds without much apparent damage. I think it is because they are hollow so the fast 5.56mm rounds simply zip right through, only poking small holes.

We have shotguns and can disintegrate it with birdshots, slugs and buckshots if we want, but I'm wondering if I can make it more fun with 5.56 rounds if I fill the hollow mannequin with liquid expanding foam? I'm hoping the foam will allow energy transfer of the 5.56mm round and allow it to cause more damage to the mannequin.

    Will it work? Thanks.

This and a little duct tape will make them a little more reactive.

or i've seen some people use this to test vests and things.

Yeah, if you want to continue owning firearms, you should probably take this advice and do the exact ****ing opposite. Felonies can also have an adverse effect on your future employment prospects and ability to vote.

I'm not sure shooting at mannequins is such a good idea. It will do nothing for your shooting skills and if a self defense situation ever occurred in your life .

That video would convict you before a jury ever assembled !

A fun alternative could be to set up 5 charcoal brickets spaced apart at a close distance, ( rifle 10 yds) then compete with your companion, see who hits all 5 the fastest . Try prone, sitting , and standing to change the drill.

Balloons, water balloons etc are alternative targets. I like charcoal because they degrade and pulverize, so no left over debris to clean .
Try throwing the charcoal up and hitting it with shotgun loads ! Don't be discouraged when your buddy tells you " just dump out the whole bag " I wasn't, I eventually I began to hit then nearly every time .

                My 2 cents

lol... people are hardcore. i understand training but sometimes you just want to have fun and shoot stuff.

i guess you wouldn't want to do stuff that's legally questionable but damn i couldn't imaging trying to train every time I handled a firearm. you guys are hardcore.

If that's the case, using paper targets with human silhouettes would probably get you the same treatment.

a good point. what's the difference between a body shaped paper and an actual mannequin?

silhouettes don't really have a human image, but you could be correct !
I just recall the news people freaking out when they featured a story on " human targets "
I could be overreacting on the mannequin target, anyway reactive charcoal is lots of fun and shooting with a stop watch adds lots of pressure to hurry the shot
                        !

I usually lose those events, even though my marksman skills are better !

Try filling the cranial cavity with a gallon sized zip-lock bag full of red jello and spaghetti noodles. You have to mix in the noodles before the jello sets, it's important. The end result when using a 300 Win Mag is a very realistic and explosive pink mist that covers everything within about 25 feet with bits of red goo and pasta chunks. A plain white backstop would probably be spectacular......

I suppose with the proper configuration of LED lights, you could get rainbows to light up out of the bullet holes. Maybe fill it with potpourri for a mild aroma therapy effect as well.
