      Yes that method is fine, so long as the firearm is in a hard-sided locked container.

      Sounds fine, so long as the Gun Vault stays locked. In this case the TSA lock is not required, but you can use it if you want to.

      And before anyone says "You can't use a TSA lock for a firearm!!", in this case you can. The firearm is locked in the gun vault via a key, having a TSA lock on the outer soft-suitcase is just coincidental and does not change the fact that the firearm remains in a locked hard-sided container. If the TSA lock was the only lock protecting the firearm it could not be used according to transportation regulations.

        Follow up question, thou I'm sure this has been asked and answered many times. Can ammo be kept with the firearm in the locked case, or, in addition to being unloaded, need all ammo be kept separate?
