Specific "what gun" question...

I was evacuated from Carlsbad yesterday. I brought the wife and cats. Everything else I left. I do carry a 9mm in the jeep so I had that.

I'm back but trapped. The CPD has blocked off all the roads. Legoland is back open but I can't get there. At least I have a pool but it's full of ash.

I geniunely hope you, your family and property all end up safe and sound, Jimi.

Get your LTC if you can. If you plan on staying with Uncle Sam, you're going to have to play by his rules. Keep it concealed, don't print at all...the other sheeple in the shelter with you will probably go into hysterics if they think you have a gun, at which point you'll be treated very badly by heavily armed men.

A better plan might be to avoid Club Fed entirely, but we all have to make our choices.

*No ability to CCW at this point.
*Any gun that is brought would stay concealed, longgun or otherwise.
*Not going to be walking "patrols" or anything of the sort. Very little chance as i see it, for people to know i have anything with any gun i bring.
*My intention for the gun is a last resort and that being said, i want something i can fight with, move with and "win" if need be. That points to a rifle or a shotgun to me.
*Just like Jimi noted, he's being detained, however benignly, by the authorities and probably had other plans, but is having to adapt. Further, sometimes "heading to the woods" just isn't feasable when you're required to report to work and family is asked to evacuate. Or if the "woods" themselves are on fire...lol.

To your specific question I would stick with a full size pistol in at least 9mm. A few extra mags would be a good idea too. Get a pack with a hidden compartment to keep it in, or make a hidden compartment in the pack you have. That way if they do a bag check you are more likely to get it through in the rush to process all the people flooding through the doors of the evac site.

I'm of the same mindset, quite honestly. To that end I have a maxpedition Condor II pack that i use for work, that has a semi-hidden CCW compartment. My XD9 5" fits perfectly in there, when i've had need/desire to legally transport or ccw.

My wife and i were talking,though, and wondered if that was the best choice. I told her i'd post up on here and ask you fine folks.

All my family members out of town know they can bunk with us---there's bedding, cots and spare sleeping bags and food aplenty, just as I know I can crash with them if need be.
If you don't have such arrangements, make them.

Thats an option, yes, but not always possible due to traffic, road closures, unsafe weather conditions, etc. None of which have anything to dowith the function or disfunction of one's extended family or friend network.

I would take a compact 9mm in a backpack. Also, in an emergency situation I won't be worried about too many gun laws, but more about protecting my family.

It would be a toss up for me but my go to firearm would be a rifle and secondary a pistol. I guess I'd probably be dead mainly because I wouldn't give up my rifle or sidearm and would want whoever is with me to do the same. I could care less what's legally rite or wrong in circumstances like shtf scenarios. I wouldn't be out to harm anyone but if anyone saw how police were no where to be found and how criminals ran the streets after Katrina, would you leave yourself and those with you in harms way.

Your SHTF plan should never be "go along with FEMA." That said, I'd go with a handgun in my waistband over a long gun.

Good prepper has a pre-stocked bugout location.
You may not even need to take a gun with you if there is already one stored there...

Seems like a rifle or shotgun would be far more problematic .. a handgun and mags can be kept out of sight in your backpack.

What about an AR that breaks down into two smaller pieces, or possibly a winchester model 12 or stoeger coach gun. Both break down into smaller packable parts.

Those seem pretth concealable, even if you were forced indoors
