Transfer of a preban Bushmaster M17

It was registered before the 89 ban. If I add a bullet button, can it be transferred in Cali?

The first year for the Bushmaster version of this rifle was in 1992.

My take is that they are Cali legal with a bullet button.
Smarter folks than me will be along shortly to add legal knowledge.

A few have been sold here on Calguns.

If the gun is in California and is not registered as an assault weapon (it's prohibited by SB23) the OP is in illegal possession of it - if it doesn't have a BB + 10rd magazine.

I doubt it could be 'registered before the 89 ban', as...
        (1) I think this gun was early 90s [i.e, post Roberti-Roos]
        (2) any 4473/DROS paperwork done in Calif. before 2000 is irrelevant
        (3) it would have had to have been specially registered in CA as an AW in 2000 regardless of any dealer paperwork.

You should put a BulletButton maglock on it ASAP to reduce felony risk.
