    My, how times have changed!

I was just reminiscing with an old timer.

I remember being 12 years old, my brother was 10. He and I both grabbed our .22 rifles, filled our pocket with shells and walked through our neighborhood toward our rabbit hunt in the woods at the edge. No one had to tell us to keep it pointed in a safe direction, and as we walked through the residential neighborhood, people on their porches smiled and called out something about catching dinner for mom. It's like they were proud to see two young American rifleman taking care of business.

These days I don't think I could walk through the neighborhood with a .22 rifle, let alone my 12-year-old boy, and we live in the country! Only about 30 years ago, but my, how times have changed!

Yup. Use to ride my bike with my pellet gun slung over my shoulder through the neighborhood on the way to hills where we would shoot. I don't think any kid today would make it more than a block before someone called the cops.

Well we were definitely capable of catching dinner!

I lived in a suburb of Pittsburgh and would walk across town to a patch of woods to shoot my .22 rifle. It was in a case as I walke along but the police knew what it was and would wave to me. When I'd catch a ride to go to the real rifle range at a teen I stood on the street corner with my mauser slung over my shoulder and the bolt for the rifle in the pocket of my dad's WW2 field jacket. The police who went by never gave me a second look. Early 70s but it may has well have been a hundred years ago.

That's what my CCW instructor said. He told me they would store them in the Principal's office until the end of the day.

Back in the 70's, I would walk out the front door with my .22 rifle and walk about a block and I was out in the woods. Plinking all day long.
This was in Michigan and on an Air Force Base.
If I remember right, a box of 50 .22 rounds costs less than 50 cents at the base exchange.
Those really were the good ol days.

I grew up in the 'burbs of Cleveland. I already had BB and pellet guns and my Marlin 60 .22 when I rode my bike to KMart and bought a Universal .30 cal M1 carbine.

Rode home with it and was playing with it it my bedroom. My father walks in and says "what's your plans for that rifle?". I said "it's for plinking". He looked at me kind of funny and says "you better be careful with that"!

                          I was 16 and that was 1978.
