    Question about potential ricochets

I have some old trade show banners that are to be thrown away and I'm thinking of using them as funny targets for my next company team shoot.

The one I'm concerned about is a roll up banner thinggy with a slim aluminum rod on the back. It looks like this:
    Front View

    Back View

We won't be shooting at the base but if a round hits the backing rod, will it ricochet? The rod is hollow aluminum, not solid. We'll be using: 12 gauge shotguns (birdshots, slugs and buckshots), .223rem / 5.56, 9mm, 45acp and 308win.

How far back should the shooters be if you use this as a target? Thanks.

Birdshot is the only thing that I'd think could be a problem, but I'd shoot the heck out of 'em!

even though you're not shooting at it, the base is probably the only thing you have to worry about. The surface angles 'could' cause some splatter problems. Probably aluminum and most rounds would go through it, but I wouldn't use it at close range.

That thing will bust after 1 hit.

Thanks, I'm thinking we'll pile some sandbags on the base, both to prevent ricochets and also to stabilize it (it'll be leaning back on a target stand too).

I think we'll stand back 50 yards, it's too big a target to miss anyway, especially if the entire team start hosing it down with lead.

We'll record a video of it and send it to the marketing department.

I'm hoping it will disintegrate if 5 of us starting hosing it down with rapid fire (its a private range).

It would be more trouble (perhaps more than it's worth), but you could bring a 6' section of 2x4 and work it so that would hold up the banner against it's internal spring tension. It would I think be more stable as well.

But I personally wouldn't be too worried about the any riochets.

You can go pick up some candidate road signs, those have thin steel rods on the ends and hold up pretty good.

It can be fun if you pick someone you're not voting for. You can also stick on some shoot-n-C or similar targets.

Hah hah....this sounds like fun, but probably illegal and count as stealing?

The risk of ricochet is negligible with that. Even the birdshot will go thru thin aluminum. The back post will not last very long.

Just make sure you wear your ricochet proof hearing protection:
